Seal - No 2 thread, What's the verdict????
Have started another thread, as CM's was being hijacked. There are two of my 2008 babies, both fillies. Are they seal, dark bay or even black??? This is Cindy. Baby photo, a few hours old. Now, 7 weeks. The red on the nose is baby fluff & is falling out, looks black underneath. Then this is Dreamcat, at about 4 months. Her dam is the very dark seal mare on CM's thread & dad is red bay.

LOL, I am reserving my judgement till they both get yearling summer coats.
I have been wrong before picking colours from foal coats lol horribly wrong in fact :rofl , & I am just not sure yet.
But I reckon my instinct agrees with you ACC.

I think seal rather than black. That red nose is a giveaway for seal, I think, and a black foal would be more mousy there.

For those of us who believe that seal is a variant of bay, that has to be correct!

Re: Seal - No 2 thread, What's the verdict????

Why do you say bay RF???? My black stallion had lovely gold goggles round his eyes at that age & gold on his flanks. He tested homozygous black, NO agouti & is now a blue black & never fades in the slightest. Just goes to show that black foals can indeed have red or gold on them, that's why I am not making a judgement just yet.

But yes, until we know better, seal is bay. Just that it many cases it is very distinctive visually from a normal bay.

Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean when you say Seal Bay?? From what I have seen on the pictures you have put up are basically bay horses but tend to look more black and seem to have brown on the muzzle and or around the eyes??
Am I correct in this?
Sorry for sounding dumb but I am still learning and had never heard of seal bay.

Bannerminis, seal bays are essentially dark bays, sometimes nearly black. We don't know if this is just a variant of bay or another color entirely, although when tested these horses do test as bays.

Re: Seal - No 2 thread, What's the verdict????

Ok I get you. I have seen a few TB's like that and I also have a mini mare now the grand age of 18 yrs young that is basically black with a brown muzzle and around they eyes.
I have never tested her but she has always been with a chestnut stallion and I have had 4 foals from her and they were all bay and I have seen photos of 2 previous foals (before I had her) and they two were bay so I am guessing that she is Homozygous for black and carries at least 1 copy of bay. She is (from what I can find out) part bred fallabella and shetland.

Here is a pic of her and in case you think she has blue eyes its just the flash as the pic was taken in the evening lol.

They also call it brown. In some countries, they have a word for it that means "black and tan."

Re: Seal - No 2 thread, What's the verdict????

Here in the land of Oz, it is very often called black/brown & many horses are registered this way.

Rabbit, yes I asked your opinion, but what I meant is how can you tell if the reddish tints are just due to foal coat &
might disappear or are they due to the effect of agouti ??? I don't think you can at this stage, the red nose on the upper foal photo is foal coat, it is all falling out
& is so far, black underneath.

Of course a test would tell me if they carry agouti, thought at this stage I am not going to bother as I really don't care one way
or the other, it is not going to make any difference to my breeding program, it would just be for my own interest.

Black for the first, and Seal for the second.
