Sad Day

Forums

 Saxy my ASH mare aborted twin colts today. She was due 24th of September to Bryjen Fort Talon Very sad, had been really concerned about her, vet was confident from the scans she wasnt carrying twins, I had been real worried about her size. I have had her for three previous foals so now my mare. Little lost for words at the moment. There was one black with long white socks and facial white on bottom lip and looked like a blaze and the other the bigger of the two was chestnut, flaxen tail with no obvious white. The mare is fine which of course was our biggest concern, seems to have just known something wasnt right and had left them to come up to her stable where she usually foals. She is a little unsettled but is hungry and smoochy so thats always a good sign. Havent spoken to my vet yet,he was out on a call and tried getting me last night when I was in the shower. Was only speaking to him last week as I was concerned about her size. They where specifically scanned for twins as Brian Smith (Runs the breeding centre where the stallion is)had thought she had ovulated two folicles at conception. Have spoken to Brian and she is right to go back late Aug/Sept, think I will leave her with him to be scanned this time, he seems to know what he's doing more so than the vet! Will speak to him today though re getting her flushed. The foals both appeared as though they where alive still when or before birth and both had complete placentas. The chestnut was nearly newborn foal size and the black was 2/3 its size. I think she just plain ran out of room for them.

I'm sorry, thats really sad. I'm glad your mare is okay,it does sound like she just ran out of room for them. I know most twins don't last until birth time or have alot of growth issues, such as underdeveloped knees and whatnot if they do live.

 I am very sorry for you and your mare's loss. It is hard to lose a foal an to lose two is double the heartache. I hope all goes well for your mare and that there are no complications. @};-

thank you all.

the mare is doing fine, she seems to have handled it fairly well. Ours horses are all running out as a herd at the moment and that seems to be helping her.

Yes, the herd supports them...I always find it is best to turn them straight back out at a time like this.
It's the utter waste of it all that gets you, isn't it??
Damn, still better luck next time, eh??
This is when we really realise we are not God!!!

Saxy, my mare is very good, was horsing to poor Rumba over the fence this morning, so moved her. She is rebooked to go back to the other stallion end of august/sept.

If we could only grieve and move to the future (or merely the present) as they do! I am glad she is ok, and that you have had some good re-bonding with her yourself. Keep trusting your personal experience with her, you were right on. Remember the vet works for us, we are the executive.
