Red dun spotted mule?

Can anyone find me an example of a red dun spotted mule? Or any red spotted mule for that matter? A donkey would work too. Thanks!

not duns(that I can tell from pics), but at least red with spots

ACC there has never been a red based spotted donkey that I have ever heard of existing! Mules are possible but if they are it does not come from the donkey spotting.

Well that is truly fascinating. I'm going to assume then that there are some linkage issues preventing this from happening then. How sad.

Of all the ones you posted there are the only two who look both red dun and donkey spotting. Fascinating. There is definitely some type of linkage issue here. I'm betting the crossover rate is MINISCULE.

CM do non dun reds get donkey spotting or is it just the red duns that don't?

CMhorses Wed, 10/14/2009 - 17:29

I am pretty sure it is linked to ee and not dun, so no Ive never seen a red based donkey with obvious donkey spotting gene. They can varnish though and have other types of donkey white patterns, just not the spotted pattern. Also it is entirely possible the ones with the big stars on their heads is a totally different pattern that does effect red . I would love to see some of the big star red donkeys bred to a black based to see if the foals end up spotted, or with just a big star.

Looking through other pictures, it does seem that red donkeys can have stars, but also I would bet alot of those foals you posted are really bay based since it can be extremely hard to tell base colors on donkeys, and especially foals.

Will I'm thinking done donkey spotting gene (we'll say 'SP') is linked to 'E' (dominant extension) and probably also to 'D' (dun). That way the non spotting gene 'sp' is linked to 'e' and 'd'. Based on what we've seen the recombination rate is apparently nil and thus the genes would have to be practically right on top of each other on the chromosome. If the extension gene in donkeys is in approximately the same place as it is in horses, that would put this 'SP' gene in the general are of KIT in horses, which of course makes alot of sense. However dun is not on chromosome 3 in horses so donkey dun would have to be in a separate place from horse dun. Hmmm.

Sorry I meant SP was linked to E. Anyway, I found a picture of a black-not a 'grullo' with a large star.

Both parents are completely (visibly) solid.
Also these donkeys are full siblings and both have stars

This is the father-he is varnished on his face
http://www.donkeys.net/images/FiftyFire…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Also I don't think SP is related to dun, I've seen dun and non dun spotted donkeys with various levels of expression.

This is slightly unrelated but I found a foal that is actually a convincing bay to me (bay like we see in horses) which is very odd considering most bay donkeys only have black manes/tails and sometimes black dorsals.

accphotography Wed, 10/14/2009 - 19:03

Oh yeah I hadn't thought about that but there are plenty of 'E' dun not spotteds so yup, 'SP' is just very closely linked to 'E'... which definitely implies a KIT type thing.

CMhorses Wed, 10/14/2009 - 19:21

As far as different donkey white patterns go, it looks to me there are several types such as varnish, "star" (because I think it is its own type, and does not come from parents that are obviously SP),'blotchy' SP and 'small spot' SP.
This is what I mean by 'blotchy' http://www.spottedass.com/Photos/Images…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.spottedass.com/Photos/Images…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
To me, that first donkey seems to have more than one thing going on-it's just odd to have such a large and solid black area and then small little spots on the rest.
These are odd too

This is just bizzare,I think they said it is a mule out of a 'blue roan overo paint mare'.

Lol, honestly from my experiences with Ellie, I would recommend at least one for every person. Not only are they great pets-even if they are not trained for much more than leading- they protect everything,even the mini ones will go after something as big as a Pyrenees dog (even though thats not really safe for them in the case if it was a pack of coyotes,but one I'm sure they could handle). I was telling ACC the other day how strange it is to have this little thing come running up to you, ears back, and not be angry at you, but happy to see you.

CMhorses Thu, 10/15/2009 - 17:03

They are fairly profitable even if they are not trained or showed (at least around here) plus they are adorable.
