Red Dun with a silver mane

Looks like normal dun guard hairs to me.

Agreed. Silver doesn't show on red anyway so unless its an odd wild bay then it wouldn't be silver.

sooty? guard hairs?

we had a chestnut at the BSA camp I worked at who had that same type of grey mane...it was mixed in a bit with some normal chestnut hair...and he was 15, so he wasn't going grey, nor was he very old. I think someone on here told me it was due to sooty or sabino. Or maybe it was another color forum...his tail was normal colored...maybe a shade or two darker than his coat.

I think that is flaxen + sooty at work.

Mare down the road looks like this. She had the Sootiest pali baby this spring. Baby started out all chocolate with a white mane and tail. Now she's pali on top, and chocolate on the bottom. Moma has a red tail and a flaxen with sooty mane.

Guard hairs don't often grow all the way down or take the color of the whole mane. This is flaxen + sooty IMO.
