Red Dun Question
I have a colt that is out of the mare that is posted in the What Colour is my horse section - the Dunalino mare and the colt is by a chestnut stallion. Anyway the colt is chestnut with a lighter mane and tail and when he was born he had a dorsal stripe but I didnt know if this was an actual dun marking or foal countershading and as his coat grew into the winter woolies you couldnt see the stripe. I was out this evening to do a spot of grooming and while I was brushing out his tail and when I seperated out the hairs I found a length (c.1/2" wide) of hair in the middle that is made up of dark red and black hairs. It just underneath the lighter red hairs and between the blonde hairs each side of his tail (hope all that makes sense). So now I am questioning again if he is a red dun - his legs before he got super hairy were lighter then his body and were kinda sooty in appearance. Here is Prince just 1 day old IMAGE(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/Prince.jpg) IMAGE(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/2008_0513genminis0016.jpg) A pic of his back although it doesnt come up as well in the picture IMAGE(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/2008_0513genminis0018.jpg) IMAGE(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/2008_0513genminis0019.jpg) A little older just so you can see his legs IMAGE(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/2008_0801Kerry0137.jpg) IMAGE(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/2008_0801Kerry0145.jpg) IMAGE(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/2008_0801Kerry0124.jpg) I will get some pics of him tomorrow and also his tail just to see what everyone thinks. He will be clipped around mid april so will see one way or another if there is an actual dorsal.

Re: Red Dun Question

Since we know he has to be red based, I will say he's going sooty. Those dark, marbled legs would have said SILVER to me on any horse with the possibility of being black based, but alas. I don't see cream and I definitely don't see dun. The foal color is wrong for dun and the dorsal really doesn't look dun at all.

Re: Red Dun Question

I think you are right as I think the mare has sooty. It just threw me with the length of black and dark red hairs running down the middle of his tail - will still try to get a pic of him.

Re: Red Dun Question

Probably also sooty. Oh btw, gray would have been the other thing I'd have thought (besides silver) when seeing those legs.

This is Slaney's grandsire, which is where the Dun comes from.
He was born more or less this colour, although the mane and tail; can be darker, this is the "norm" for Red Dun in Europe, and the dorsal stripe is obvious and clearly delineated.
I am pretty sure your colt is Chestnut.
