Question on grey
Ive just read on another forum that when a horse greys the mane and tail are the last to change colour , is that true? I have a mini from last years foal crop that is greying and his mane and tail are the first to change colour now I am beginning to wonder if Ive got it wrong as the poster(a member on main board) called the colt a silver bay

Re: Question on grey

looks silver bay to me, also since it is not mature yet, it can still be changing colors some from foal coat to adult coat

Re: Question on grey

I don't see any sign of gray in the colt. Is silver bay a possibility? It maybe interesting to see what color he sheds off this spring.

Re: Question on grey

Yea, that definately looks silver bay to me.The white tail gives it away. Do you have any full pics of the mother?

Re: Question on grey

The mother looks like she could be a silver bay, but the picture for me is rather small and I cant click it to enlarge it.

Re: Question on grey

From that small picture I do want to say that mare is silver bay. They can look almost the same as a chestnut with flaxen. Also there could be a chance that sire is a black silver with graying, but I dont know his background.

Re: Question on grey

Well its very possible you have a silver bay with graying. He is still young so, in a few years you will know for sure at least on the graying part, or if you get him DNA tested.

Re: Question on grey

In that picture you can defiantly see the gray. Flaxen chestnut going gray. Gray will often darken the legs before the horse turns white.

I think both the dam and the sibling are flaxen chestnut. The dam just isn't the right color for silver bay imo. I would expect the lower legs to be darker.

Re: Question on grey

If the mare has dark silvery roots in her mane and tail then shes silver, if its honey colored then she is just a flaxen chestnut, and that mare looks like she has an awful lot of white around her nose...does that look pangare to anyone? or is it just something else.I cant ever remember seeing a chestnut w/flaxen having that white of a nose but hey, I could be crazy. Also the sire could be a black silver or bay silver (I dont know what he looked like as a foal) with graying.
The second foal just looks chestnut w/flaxen imo.

That is not always true CM....

Here is just one example

This kind of silvery mane without silver is also common in Welsh ponies.

I was also going to point this out. My flaxen chestnut Welsh mare has silver hairs too.

Wow, so many smilies and not a nodding one!

Re: Question on grey

phew , I thought I was going to have to change his reg papers and you know how difficult that can be ! silver would have been interesting but theres no point in testing the stallion as he has since been gelded

Re: Question on grey

Grey can darken them before they start to lighten up.

Re: Question on grey

I say bay going gray. Dam and her other foal flaxen chestnut. I think the light mane and tail on the foal are just "baby flaxen", which does happen on bay and black.

Re: Question on grey

just for reference ....I have another grey question I was once told that silver speeds up the greying process , is there any truth in that ?

Re: Question on grey

I meant to mention that. Yes, it's true. Many gray + silver are born white. Another reson I don't think silver in this case.
