Is it true that you can tell if a horse is a homozygous tobiano by the presence of bear paws in the coat?
NZ I think you're right. I think I was getting Plaudette and Plaudit confused, even though Plaudette is by Plaudit. When the owner would talk about the horses, she'd just say they were Plaudit bred. I know that Zips Blue Print goes back to Plaudette through his dam, and I'm sure they are splash, blue eyes and all, and splashy get. His dam has been sold, and he's still breeding. When I first got into the Apps when I was much younger, there was a Plaudette or Plaudit mare who had the 4 white legs, blaze and blue eyes. She had a half brother that looked the same way, and her foals had the same markings. I never ever gave it any thought till talking with...Carolyn Shepard and her splashed appy mare? Back then I always considered splash to be a paint horse color, and didn't know that blue eyes are attributed to frame and splash exclusively.
I'll have to ask the hubby about the mare, he's the one that's been involved with the NZ apps pretty much from day dot. He may remember who she is--unless you're talking about Plaudette's Lucky Charm? black mare, bred by C Duncan, Ranfurly, by MacIntosh out of Realms Sitka?

I don't know what her registered name was. She was chestnut. And I beleive she had a solid white blanket over her back, no spots. This mare wouldn't be in NZ, she was local owned by a women here in FL. I met her and her husband at one of the ApHC meetings for our area. It's actually how I got into apps. My dad was worried that I was isolating myself from people, and I was really passionate about horses but he wasn't able to afford much at that time. He called up a few places, and found out that the old show grounds stayed open at night for horse clubs to meet up. But the couple owned the mare, and the gelding that lookd just like her. I know she was bred at least once when I was there, and the foal had the same markings as her mom. I don't know if they continued to breed her or not, they were more hobby people and not really show people. At the time I highly doubt they knew the mare was splash. I don't know if she is still alive or not since I didn't know her age, and I don't know if they know about splash being in some appaloosa lines.

We're talking this was years ago, around 10 I think? It was right around the same time as LWS foals peaked, and a test was developed for Frame. But back then people never would have considered testing their solid or minimal 'Overo' horses because some average colored ones were testing negitive. But back then breeders weren't talking about sabino 'overos', and dominate white, or how splash effected other patterns. If the paint community wasn't talking about all this, I doubt the appaloosa community was.

Ahh, okay...I keep forgetting there is a Wellington there as well as here. LOL Y'all can forget everything I said about the bloodlines earlier since I was talking about a couple of stallions who are in the North Island here... /blush/

10 years ago...pretty much the time I was in the process of doing my immigration paperwork, packing up, etc., to move here. I was pretty far removed from the Fla. app world.
