physics of horse jumping

My son is doing an essay for his IB Physics class on the physics of horse jumping. Can anyone name any articles or books that might help him? He has to have his sources by next Thursday and I'm stumped. I'll look through my horse books when I get home but I don't recall anything specifically about the physics of it.

I remember some papers that examined the physics of it from my jumping class in Ireland (yep, I had classroom lessons on jumping horses). They did a lot of research at University of Limerick on it.

P.N.R. Powers and A.J. Harrison "Effect of the rider on the angular motion of jumping horses" Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, University of Limerick, Ireland. (There are a lot of equations and such in that article).

Gallow, P. and E. Barrey [u]Equine Vet J Suppl 23[/u] 41-44, 1997 (This is a paper where they determined the contribution of each segment of the horse to motion.)

Budihnsky, Stephen "The Nature of Horses" Phoenix Illustrated, 1998.

He should probably also look for more papers by PNR Powers as they was actively researching while I was there.

How'd you luck out with that? I have some hopes for my niece because she tells my sister about Romeo, the pony she rode, and how you stop (whoa) and go (walk) everytime they drive passed my barn.

You are blessed CC. Having horsey family does help. Hank helps me out a lot and does 99% of the funding, but he rides so seldom (hadn't been on a horse in his life until I bought Darwin); out of my kids, only 2 are horsey (Ben and Deanna); of the dozen grandkids there are 5 horsey ones: Melissa, Aleigha, Nikki, Issic and Naomi. Of these, Melissa comes over to ride a couple times a year; same with Nikki; Aleigha lives outside Chicago, so I am not sure about her riding habits; Issic comes up a few times a month to ride and Naomi (the 3 yr old) has her own filly to ride - she is taking lessons now.

Of course, with one more grand on the way (just found out Wednesday :bounce ) there is always hope for another horse lover. :love

I really am blessed. My kids are moody teenagers sometimes but I really have nothing to complain about. My son is really too busy with IB to be a serious rider but he likes to dabble with the horses, and he's using horseback riding lessons to fulfill the physical requirement for his IB diploma.

Just because I can (and I'm the proud mom), I'm going to post a couple photos of him. (*)
