Pearl...
Okay...not getting much off the little blurb on the dilutions page on here. How does two copies affect chestnut, bay and black? Or does it only affect chestnut? How does one copy plus one copy creme affect those same three bases? What about one copy plus two copies of creme--i'm guessing at that point it would just be diluted pale creme all over anyway though... Does anyone know how it reacts with silver (either one or two copies of pearl) or champagne? Or Dun? Haven't really seen much on it to be honest and wanted to learn some more. :D

Re: Pearl...

Two copies on chestnut looks very much like a palomino:

Two copies on bay looks like a strange, light buckskin:
IMAGE(http://www.newdilutions.com/pearl/images/champagne_potro_lat2.JPG)
IMAGE(http://www.newdilutions.com/pearl/images/carin1c.jpg)

This is theorized to be two copies on black (his body is all one color, not like a bay base would be):
IMAGE(http://www.newdilutions.com/pearl/images/carin2f.jpg)

One copy of pearl plus one copy of cream creates a pseudo double dilute. Usually very pale skin (almost pink usually with some mottling, similar to a champagne) and either blue (not bright blue) or a light tan/hazel eye.

One cream and one pearl on chestnut:

Both on bay:

Both on black:

I am not aware of any that have two copies of cream and one of pearl, but I really don't think it would make a visual difference.

It supposedly shouldn't act with other genes. It either has to be homozygous or be with cream to express. HOWEVER, I can't recall where I've seen it, but I've seen a horse with either silver and pearl or dun and pearl (possibly I've seen both) and they definitely seemed different to me. I'll try to remember where I saw them. I don't have any idea what it would do with champagne. I strongly suspect it would be close to a pseudo DD, but I have no real scientific basis for that (outside of a theory).

Re: Pearl...

i appreciate the quick response :) Would love to see some of the other pictures when you have time!

my next question...are there names for these other than, for example, one copy of pearl, one copy of creme on a bay base (something shorter...like how champagne on chestnut is gold champagne, or two copies of creme on bay is perlino). I know there is a horse game out there that designated short names to them, of their own creation--fawn, ash, platinum, sesame, etc...but there are a few on that game that have "new" shorter names of their creation (gold champagne is called buff for example)....

Re: Pearl...

I noticed the cream and pearl on black wasn't working so I fixed it.

As far as I know there is no name for any pearl horses. I do wish we could come up with a one word name for pearl + cream though so we could say like "peach bay" or something instead of "pearl and cream on bay". :laugh1

Re: Pearl...

Ive always just added "pearl" to the end of the color.

For example, palomino pearl, bay pearl, smoky black pearl.

Re: Pearl...

Sponenburg's new book has some 'names', I think, but a bunch of "pearl breeders" (for lack of a better term...) are rather upset about some of the stuff he put in his new book. I don't have it, so don't know exactly what has them in an uproar.

He annoys me in general for pulling random names out of the air and naming whatever he feels like... whatever he feels like. :laugh1

He attached the champagne names to pearl. You know gold, amber, classic, sable that is what has the pearl owners upset. I also have some pictures of a homozygous black pearl i can attach as soon ads I find what I did with them

Okay...I get the gripe (the 'who died and left you in charge' feeling) but how else do names become commongood? There is no name committee that gets together every first Tuesday of the month to discuss and vote on such things.
So what would one consider proper? ;)

I personally feel that he should be discussing things like this with the people who breed those colors, which he obviously has not, rather than making up names for things he has very little part in. And he (or anyone) definitely shouldnt be using names that are ALREADY being used for something completely different.

Re: Pearl...

Well if it's a somewhat new discovery I think the person who found the gene should be allowed to name it's variations.

I agree with RMT above ^.

It is definitely in Paints. In fact it is FAR more common in Paints because at the time of their breeding and producing the original carriers (My Ton Time, Prizes Bar Link and Barlink Macho Man) were all registered Paint (well, My Ton Time was AQHA, but she produced more APHAs than AQHAs) because they were croupouts. So from '77 until '04 any descendant that could be carrying pearl (with exception of a couple from My Ton Time) were registered APHA. Once the white rule passed and farms started going back and getting full AQHA papers for some of the older horses, then it became an AQHA color too. To this day, however, I RARELY see a full AQHA with pearl.
