Palomino?

I have been pondering what color this foal might shed out. She looks primarily palomino, but those dark legs look odd to me. Dam is a dunskin. Sire is most likely a chestnut pinto (they are mustangs). Would sooty show up this young? Obviously it is all a guess, as at this point she is still in the wild. LOTS of red bases (including palominos) shed out REALLY dark their first shed, and then lighten back up after that.

There is a very good example on this page. The foal started out red, shed out REALLY dark, and then lightened back up

So, in answer to your question, yes that foal looks palomino IMO

I really like her markings, they are just perfect!
Since the sire is unknown I am going to put in a tentative vote for Silver Bay, but would be willing to accept Palomino, as what RMT says is quite right about shedding dark first time.
Even so, I would normally expect more of a goldy "cast" to the coat, which you do not get with Silver Bay, hence my suggestion.

I know my pali filly is as dark on the bottom half as this foal is from her hock to her thigh, and she looks like she is trying to dapple along her hips and lower sides (of course she could be on a foal shed...lol). I got pixs but the lighting was ALL wrong and nothing showed up like it appears in real life (sun was too bright and at the wrong angle).

her colour has that dull flat matt look that red duns have

I was thinking maybe dun as well - dam is obviously dun and it is possible, however I am NO expert on dun (not even close). But at this age and with only 1/2 a pedigree it is hard to tell.

I don't have any duns "that I know of" even though Patches is out of a red dun dam and has funny "light tan" patches in her bay coat (not just flanks or muzzle). One day I will get around to testing her, but (and it is a tremendous long shot) if she throws a dunskin foal next spring, I'll know - :ymdaydream: :ympray: :angle

There was no dorsal stripe on the foal as far as I could tell. I am still thinking Palomino.

Yeh I'd say pally too, both the foal and mare are nice colour and markings!

It was the flatness coupled with the no dorsal that made me think Silver Bay
