OK, what is this foal???
Came across this foal today. http://www.australianwesternhorseshowcase.com.au/classified/PH/168.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; He is OLW neg, sire tobiano, dam chestnut. Is this minimal tobiano or splash, or both. Funny, with those big stockings, he has no white on the face.

I only see tobiano. Tobiano tends to suppress face white.

Maybe that's what tobiano looks like without sabino.

I personally see just minimal tobiano.

Splash and sabino could be hiding, but I dont see anything that would make me think splash.

With that much leg white I'd expect this one to have some sort of white marking on his head!

Agreed- minimal degree of Tobiano expression.

Re: OK, what is this foal???

So what specifically signifies no splash??? Apart from one leg, the others look sort of "dipped in paint" to me.
Does splash have to have white on the head????

Also, I have noticed in Shetlands here (Oz shetties, not the long legged US variety), that it is very common to see white on the faces of tobiano shetties, yet white markings on legs or faces are not seen very often otherwise. Also found a pic of a tobiano shetty foal with blue eyes, presumably splash, as far as I know, no frame in shetlands.
What would explain this???

Re: OK, what is this foal???

I don't see splash in this pattern because there is no face white (splash would almost never cause that much body white and leave the head alone), the tail is white from the top down (splash goes for the tail tip and up so the whole tail would be white to have enough expression to cause the area around the tail head to have white too), and the body spot on the neck is more in the tobiano are of expression. If you took some white-out to that picture and colored in a line from the neck spot to the front leg and another line from the point of the white by the tail head down to the point of the hind leg white (plus connected the two lines along the back), you would get a pattern that looked like this:
http://www.equine-color.info/index.php?q..." onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (though he also has some sabino thrown in)

Or this (with a bit more imagination :D):
http://www.equine-color.info/index.php?q..." onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (note the amount of body white and the solid head- classic tobiano)

Sounds like there is a lot of tobiano + sabino/splash in your shetlands (any welsh blood mixed in there as welsh seem to have a lot more splash than shetlands do?). The majority of my tobiano ponies (that likely have a high percentage of shetland and/or welsh) have at least sabino too.

These are some of mine (all tobiano + sabino):

There is not thought to be any Sabino in UK Shetlands.

That's interesting Rabbit. All our shetties came from the UK originally.

Here are some UK links with shetties with white on their faces.
What would be causing it then??? Are they all splash????

Oh my gracious - I am in LOVE :love with Baliter Izzy. That solid head and tail with a white body sporting no more color than cat tracks across the loin/rump --- =p~ :X

Re: OK, what is this foal???

Yes, the face white is attributed to Splash.....this is on Lewella's research, I am not 100% convinced, Rabbit is pure UK Shetland (actually related to those ponies, my original stud name was "Helawi") and he has thrown some foals that show a lot of Sabino traits, just not enough to convince Llewella.
It is, unfortunately, also possible that Rabbit's Sabino came in "over the fence" as his lineage tails out in "Foundation Stock" after five generations, due to the war, and his Grandmother was decidedly Welsh looking and also in temperament!!!!

Yeh I find that weird with the tobi shetties too, you don't get the larger white face markings unless tobi is also there. I've also never seen a shetland with a white sock that wasn't tobi. So the 'no sabino' seems right in that there are no white socks, but the tobi's do get some funky white blazes sometimes which definitely seems a more splash thing. Thus the white stars are probably splash too. Tobi definitely seems to 'boost' the splash though as I've never seen splash markings on anything that wasn't a tobiano.
Cheers

that horse has a dragon on him  (the white area, facing left, wing on the back, puffing smoke on the neck.)
