New years resolutions anyone?

Mine are to be younger, smarter and skinnier =)) seriously though I was extremely fit most of my life and got back into very good shape after both kids. Over the past few years I have been through a series of shoulder surgerys that has left my right shoulder worse than ever, so I have put on 15-20 lbs all in my middle. Not good because although my 85 year old mother is very healthy, my 70 year old father has been through a summer of battling diabetes, heart failure and cancer. Soooooo my husband and I will start running 2 miles about 3 days a week and gradually work up to 5 miles. It's fustrating to me that I incorporate as much upper body work as I would like but oh well. Anyways I thought if any of you on the forum would like to join in we could have a little get fit & healthy in 2011 support on here. I know alot about diet and exercize that I could help with. I will be probably be starting spring quarter back to college to study to be a medical lab tech, "smarter part :D " but I think I can get a good start before that.

Rusti Sun, 12/26/2010 - 22:31

I'm also going to get in shape. A couple years ago I was 190 lbs and went on Jenny Craig, and at one point was down to 138 (I'm 5'9"). I'm now up to 156 and very unhappy with that. None of my size 7 jeans I've been wearing for the past 1.5 years fit me comfortably now. So Jan. 1st I'm starting P90X! I even convinced hubby to do it...he is a bit overweight as well, but has much more strength/muscle that I could ever dream of lol.

Dogrose Mon, 12/27/2010 - 11:26

Yeah I'll be joining you in the get thinner club :D I'm getting married soon (bit of a whirlwind decision so no time to lose much, I just want to look a bit nicer in the pics).

rodeoratdogs Mon, 12/27/2010 - 13:17

Yay! you guys are getting me syked up for this. The most success I have ever had is by eating alot actually and consistant exercize, of course what your eating is key. A balanced diet with low processed sugar & low saturated fat. The less processed the better, the only downfall is that it's expensive to eat right. It's to easy for your body to break down processed foods so they are easily stored into fat. I do like to suppliment with protein powder multi vitamins and amino acids, so I don't loose muscle. As far a exercize we are not all created equal and different body types benifit from slightly different exercizes, the key is to be consistant, don't quit and you'll get there, and don't starve your self or you will inhibit your body's fat loss. If you eat small healthy frequent meals you will trick your metabolism into thinking it can go ahead and rapidly burn fat, spured on by your exercize because you'll eat again soon it's ok we're not starving.
Here is a website that has the different body types http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/cynthia…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'm a mesomorph.
Rusti, your weight loss was amazing, it is hard to keep it off, harder than loosing I dare say. I'm so jelouse you can do P90X, we got it but my shoulder can't take that much upper body work right now, I have to much pain, but I think it's an awesome workout. Dogrose coangratulations on your engagement!
I don't care to much about what I weigh, because different body types can be either heavier or lighter than they look.

Age does make a difference it was twice as hard to get in shape at 41 as it was at 28.
Maybe we can share challanges and recipes stuff like that just to support each other. My challange is to find somthing besides running I can do, because some kind of strength training is important, muscle eats fat. It doesn't have to be weight training, I'm going to try my Bar method body again , it's like a dancer/strength type exercize, I used it alot last time I got in really good shape the age 41 pic. Oh and pilates is great too!

Rusti Mon, 12/27/2010 - 22:57

Woo! I would not wanna make you mad LOL. I'm like you now - I don't really care how much I weigh, since muscle weighs more than fat, I just want to be *my* ideal size! When I was down to 138 I was still not 100% where I wanted to be, and it's probably because I didn't work out while I was on Jenny Craig. But they sure did ingrain it in my brain about eating right, and eating often. I'm going to review the p90x diet plan and probably modify it to me and hubby's liking. He works full time so it's harder on him to diet when his 2 co-workers want to go out to a nice restaurant every single day at lunch. Getting him to commit to this will probably make the p90x workouts a walk in the park LOL! Here are before and after pics of me. I'm 5'9", not sure if I mentioned that before. And I'll be 28 in a few weeks. I've always been a tiny bit "buff" from working in a machine shop for years, and now working on the farm every day, but nothing like you.
Here I was Thanksgiving 2006, on the left with hubbs. I absolutely hate this picture, I was 200 lbs here.
[img]http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r147…]

June of 2009, 140 lbs, modeling a bikini I was considering buying.
[img]http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r147…]

And like I said I'm currently 155. Before I start p90x I'm going to take "before" pictures and body measurements, and I'll make a thread so everyone can check in on my progress.

rodeoratdogs Tue, 12/28/2010 - 00:07

Wow your really naturally tall and thin, nice family pics by the way. If you stick with the P90X you will get in such good shape, you'll never look as heavily muscled as I do because we have different body types, but the weight training will increase your lean body mass and you will find it easier to loose body fat and keep it off......you go girl! woot woot!!

Rusti Tue, 12/28/2010 - 00:48

Thank you! I cannot wait to start...I might not wait until the 1st, it's too exciting lol!

Oh and regarding that family pic lol.....that is my LITTLE brother in the middle! 4 years younger than me. The more I look at that pic, the more I see how much we look alike. I sure love my little bubba. Now...my half-sister (different dad) and her husband...eh...let's say she doesn't come around on the holidays anymore (or any other time for that matter). We never got along our entire lives living at home with my parents anyway, so no big loss there, and I still get to see my nieces (the 2 little girls in the pic) all the time.

Third Peppermint Tue, 12/28/2010 - 07:52

I'm jumping on the healthy eating/weight loss bandwagon, too. I've already started by (preparing for) crossfit stuff, but I'm about to change my diet, too. We'll see how it works! I get pretty sick any time I eat anything with lots of carbohydrates or sugar (fruits, breads, pasta, and candies) so I'm going to cut most (or all) of that out of my diet. Theoretically, I shouldn't die, but we'll see. :) Thank goodness I was the weird kid that wouldn't eat cookies but would eat as much broccoli as I could get.

Rusti, I wanna do the before pictures and measurements, too! It sounds motivating, but I don't know how brave I am...

Dogrose, I'm getting married soon, too! Do you have a date? Mine is August 20th so I have some time to get into perfect wedding shape. Our venue has an outdoor climbing wall so hopefully I can get in decent enough shape for some awesome wedding pics.

Rodeoratdogs - I'm keeping you in mind to question about stuff. I have no idea what body type I am, but hopefully I'll figure out soon. Ugh.

You guys are all cool.

rodeoratdogs Tue, 12/28/2010 - 09:47
I'm a blobomorph :D
Lol what's w blobomorph??

Thirdpeppermint, you should maybe look for a book called eat right for your bloodtype, I have it and it's pretty cool. It might give you a clue why your body doesn't like carbs to much. Also have you ever heard of Quinoa? It's a grain that you can fix just like rice and it's very high in protein and tasty. Did you look at the body type thing I posted? Are you an apple, gain weight in your middle or pair shaped? gain weight in your hips/thighs.

I just looked up that bloodtype thing and their website said no wheat/dairy. Go figure! I have had quinoa before, I just haven't entirely figured it out. So far I like it cooked in chicken broth and I want to try and make a quinoa pilaf.

I'm a definite pear-shaped person, though. When i gain weight it goes straight to my thighs. I haven't picked out which body type I probably am, but mostly because I haven't done enough exercise to tell what happens. Considering my eating habits it IS a miracle I'm not 200 pounds so hopefully I'm the first category.

Jenks Tue, 12/28/2010 - 11:32

Hmmm. My resolution is ...

To want less essentially. I'm greedy and want, want, want - but not like Scrooge saving money, like - I want things. Mainly for the farm or the house. I want a pool, a new deck, new windows, more horses, more land, etc etc etc.

I'm tall and fairly thin - I can't build much in the way of bulk-type muscle....but I've found that fence fixing, barn fixing, horse care, etc keeps me in fairly decent shape.... though maybe not quite that good - Hawt pics you two!

Dogrose Tue, 12/28/2010 - 12:01

Hahaha blobomorph just means blob shaped LOL, I'm a bit beyond hope really.
I don't have a date for the wedding, we will just do it as soon as the paperwork is sorted out, just a couple of witnesses at the registry office, no party or anything, we don't have any spare money. I've already seen a dress I like for less than £20 on Ebay, I'm so cheap :D

rodeoratdogs Tue, 12/28/2010 - 15:24

Dogrose, you are not beyond help, just do the healthy stuff with us and you may surpize yourself. I always put mental blinders on because if I look in the mirror I might get depressed, what I do is visualize how I want to look, and work on it until I get there. Our goals should really be to improve our quality of life, food that is good for you and execize will do that and looking better just comes along with that, it's the cherry on the cake ;-) .

ThirdPeppermint I for got to say congradulations this morning on your engagment, I was in a hurry to go get my hair cut So cangratulations!.
Yeah I find that bloodtype diet very interesting, I'm type O+ and it describes me to a T. The Author Dr. Peter D'Adamo is a second generation naturopathic physician, I'd tend to trust naturopaths over just a medical Dr. that often just want to give you a pill of some sort.
You don't have to post your measurements if you don't wan't, that's personal you can just go by how your clothes fit or whatever. I have fat picture's of inbetween the 2 pics I did post, and I really don't think I can bring myself to post those.

I found this other body type site that has a little multiple choice thing you can fill out to tell what body type you are, you don't have to log in to do it or anything, it's easy.
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/becker3…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I started shopping healthy yesterday, and today I'm going down into my bedroom to go through all my work out dvd's to which ones of them I can do with my messed up shoulder. Not officially going on a complete healthy diet until after new years because I have a date with the hubby to party which will include a few drinks that will definately be off the diet menue after new years as alcohol is like luiquid french frys :D

Jenks you are a typical ectomorph, skinny can eat just about anything, my husband is a ecto/meso he was a Olympic level swimmer 6'3" and broad shoulders, he can eat like so much candy and fruity pebbles and crap and he might get a little belly that he complains about Whaaa! but you would never notice because he has a 3 ft torsoe! but am I jelouse, yes I am X(

Third Peppermint Tue, 12/28/2010 - 16:57

Oh sweet, that says I'm closest to a mesomorph! [img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/…]

Also, 'sup O+ buddy? At least we can share blood if needbe? I'm eh on regular doctors and naturo-holistic doctors. I prefer to fix things the less extreme way unless it's something serious. Luckily, my doctor is pretty cool because he hates drugs companies. Like... HATES them. I don't go very often since I am forced to get a yearly physical and bloodwork anyway. Although, the cool thing is that I've been able to watch all of my levels for awhile now and my HDL cholesterol is rather high (around 90.) That's what I get for eating a diet of corndogs, whisky, and jalapenos.

Dogrose, you should jump on the bandwagon! It'll be fuuuuun! I can share some of my delicious, super-healthy recipes. I definitely agree with the "quality of life" part. It's a lifestyle change that can be difficult if those around you don't support it, but we've got your back. :toast Also, I wish I was as smart as you. Weddings are expensive! Both my fiance and I wanted to elope, but our mothers weren't too happy about that so we caved.

rodeoratdogs Tue, 12/28/2010 - 18:29

I want delicious healthy recepies :D So far I just went and got some chicken breasts and some mixed greens with fresh herbs like cilantro, man it's really good with the cilantro. I season up the chicken breast good and grill in on our george foreman grill. I also got some sweet potatos, those are yummy too, I use a yogurt butter on them its called brummel and brown. My husband is great about supporting and we do everything together and he love's to work out, but he only likes super plain food and like pizza, so often I have to cook seperate for him or just eat what he eats and that's where I run into trouble, I can't eat what he eats "like pizza" and get away with it like he does. I don't have a sweet tooth at all but I love french fries :D. I just had my blood work done not to long ago and it was ok, but I can get high tryglycerides at times and high cholesteral & diabetes runs in my family so I don't want to go there.

Dogrose Wed, 12/29/2010 - 02:34

The food I actually cook is healthy, we are veggies so plenty of fresh veg, pulses etc, not much salt, oil or processed food. Its the extras that get me, chocolate and cakes and the like, I'm too naughty, but that will have to stop. I had some bloodwork done recently and that was all NAD which is good. I don't excercise much, I work in an art supply store so I am on my feet all day, I'm too tired to do anything else.

Third Peppermint Wed, 12/29/2010 - 08:25
I worked out today! I did a ab workout and 20 minutes in the treadmill, it's a start :)
Working out is fab. I did 30 minutes on the elliptical. It feels like a game since I have to keep my heart rate in a certain range AND the gym has big flat screen TVs in front of each machine. It is pretty satisfying to have to modify the program because you aren't doing enough work anymore. I'll try to get some gut pictures when I get home from work if I have time and maybe some measurements, too, now that I have a cloth tape measure.

I have a session with my personal trainer tomorrow and I'll try and get a list of what I did. On Monday I was doing 80 pound barbell squats, 50 pound push presses, and 55 pound bench presses among other things. I have noo upper body strength, but I'm working on it! No ab strength either, now that I think about it. It's a miracle I can get out of bed in the mornings. Supposedly, I'm getting some kettlebells soon and I'm pretty excited about it.
I'm too naughty.
Pleeeeease tell me you have a British accent. That is my absolute favorite word in the world, especially when said with an accent. It's cute. :) I know what you mean about the cakes and stuff, although after this holiday season I'll be glad if I never see a dessert ever again. I've never had much of a sweet tooth, but sometimes I'll get on a chocolate kick. My big problem is feeling guilty not eating gift food.

rodeoratdogs Wed, 12/29/2010 - 10:17

Cool you have a personal trainer, that would be awesome. I have actually have always worked out at home. I'm pretty self motivated when I get on a roll. I have a bunch of different work out dvds of all kinds so I don't get bored and we have a bowflex. I just lost all my will to work out going through the shoulder surgerys. First one was is Jan 08 then I started to get back in shape but my shoulder froze so they did another in Oct of 09, the surgery was actually supposed to be in august but I got apendicitis and so I had to have my appendix out so my orthapedic surgeon wanted me to rest up before I had my other shoulder surgery. I still have a lot of shoulder pain but my shoulder is supposed to be fixed and stable now, and I'm sick of being out of shape so here I go again.

Please share recipes when you get a chance :D

Dogrose I think if you just cut out the sugar you will notice a big difference. A good rule of thumb is fruit, never eat anything sweeter than that. You know how a Orange tastes sweet unless you eat a peice of candy before you taste the Orange. Once you quit sugar for a certain amount of time you'll stop having the cravings. I usually quit juice too when I'm trying to loose weight unless I make it myself out of fresh fruit.

Third Peppermint Wed, 12/29/2010 - 16:51

That really sucks about your shoulder. Any idea what caused it or did it just happen for no good reason?

I really enjoy having a personal trainer because I have no motivation. It's also very helpful because I have no clue what I'm doing still. I usually wish I had SOME gym equipment at home, but I haven't figured out where I can fit any in our tiny place.

My absolute FAVORITE recipe is Caldo Tlalpeño: http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/caldo…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The radishes made me nervous the first time I made it, but they definitely work.

rodeoratdogs Wed, 12/29/2010 - 17:32

Oh that sounds good, I need to cook more, I think that's one of the big factors in being able to manage your weight, because if you like the food and it's good for you than there's no problem. Like I said though my husband is so picky and he would never eat that, so I just have to make the special effort to make sure there is somthing else he will eat the is also healthy, so we don't have the "easy" junk in the house. Like I could even make that soup up and freeze some so that I have somthing to grab fast for lunch.
My shoulder was from a work injury I worked for the same company for 22 years and the last twelve I was cutting graphite patterns with a box cutter, makeing fly fishing rods. It didn't happen over night, just from doing the same job for 40 hrs a week for 12 years. It was a lead there and it was very hard to rotate people because the jobs were so skilled. They were very high end rods that sold for average $800 a rod.
I'll post my measurements too, as soon as I remember to grab my measuring tape from the horses, I was measuring them for blankets.

EDIT: it was rotator cuff tear that needed to be repaired, I forgot to mention that.

Dogrose Wed, 12/29/2010 - 19:49

Yes I have an English accent- not really posh but not too local either- slightly West Country (think pirate) and probably a bit Northern as I have lived in Yorkshire for nearly seven years. I have weaned myself off sugar before, it took about two weeks.

Rusti Thu, 12/30/2010 - 02:44

Glad to see everybody is psyched to get the weight loss adventure started! I got the entire P90X set from a friend and made copies, and Friday Hubby and I are going to go buy weights and lots of healthy groceries. He wants me to wake up early in the mornings and workout with him before he goes to work but I don't think our living room is big enough for both of us (singlewide trailer) as P90X says to give yourself about 6'x6'. I really wish I could though...it tickled me to death that he asked me to workout with him, said he might need my help lol.

Oh, I'll have him take my "before" pics Saturday morning, I'll wear my bikini I guess, and post them here, y'all will probably be like him and say I don't need to lose any weight lol.

rodeoratdogs Thu, 12/30/2010 - 10:42

That's great that your husband want's to work out with you, I love that, mine works out with me. We were able to do the P90X together in the same room we just stagered were we stood, he was slightly in front and to the side. I already started working out and eating healthy. I'm doing my "The Firm" workouts so far and running. I also workout at home when he's at work because I have to work out way more than he does to get the gains I want. Men always loose weight faster because they carry more muscle naturally. The Firm is step/arobics and weights combined. So far so good on my shoulder as long as my weights aren't to heavy maybe I work my way up to heavier, we'll see. The only problem is that ever since my surgery, when I do peck fly my scapula pokes out of my back into the bench like it's not longer free from my shoulder. I think I'll go to the chiroprator to see if he can fix that. I did take my measurements and they are 41 bust, 35 waist 39 hips and 22 thighs, a bit bigger below my waist at the biggest part of my belly  . I know my goals because I've been there before, in both of my in shape pics I posted I was 38, 28, 35 and 21 thighs. Should we do measurements once a month and share diet & exercize tips all along? What do you guys think?

I read that and laughted...I guess my body type would be "blob", rofl. I used to be a cheerleader back in high school, but after battling RA in my legs (feet, ankles, knees) for decades, I have resigned to not being able to do much in the way of "exercise" now that it has moved into my hips and spine...but I can "dream" and watch you ladies' progession into a fit 2011.

Rusti Thu, 12/30/2010 - 22:48

Oh geez. Yeah I'd get to a chiro about the shoulder blade, that's kinda bothersome lol. Good luck with your shoulder. I bet the stronger you get the more protection you'll be giving it. I was thinking about doing weight/measurements every 14 days. I think if I do every 7 days it won't be a big enough difference to make me really happy haha. And if I wait a month I will go nuts! That being said, I'm not sure what my goals are. I'm going to complete 90 days and see how I feel. Heck, I might find my "happy place" before the 90 days is up! But I will go the 90 days anyhow. Hubby was saying yesterday how burned out he is at work (he owns a car audio shop) and that he wants to be on a plane to Mexico as soon as taxes are done. I said nope, sorry, we have to finish our 90 days first!

rodeoratdogs Thu, 12/30/2010 - 23:00

I'm giving myself until June to get in "good" shape but you saw my definition of that, at 46 it will take me a bit longer, although I'm sure atleast most of my belly will come of before then. Yeah ok every 2 weeks sounds good. :)

Third Peppermint Sat, 01/01/2011 - 16:02

Ugh, suddenly I got really busy. I'm back a little though! Anyway, I brought before pictures and measurements! I asked my fiance to take unflattering pictures of me and he did a really good job. Not to mention the floor and angles were crooked. Ugh.

Here goes:

January 1st, 2011

age: 25 years!
weight: 137.5 pounds (62.4 kg)
height: 5 feet 5 inches (165.1 cm)
body fat estimate: 29.9 %
BMI: 23.0

bust: 34" (86.4 cm)
waist: 28.5" (72.4 cm)
hips: 38" (96.5 cm)
thigh: 23.5" (59.7 cm)

side:
[img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/…]

front:
[img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/…]

I'm about to go grocery shopping and we just threw all of the cookies and candies out of the apartment. It was VERY liberating.

I think the once monthly update on numbers is a fantastic idea and I'll be sure to let you ladies know if I find any exceptional recipes or exercise tips.

Here are some extra numbers and stats for grins since I am doing the weight lifting:

biceps: 11"
shoulders: 38"
chest (under-boob): 29.5"
calf: 14"

And I'm currently doing 80 pound barbells squats, 50 pound push presses, 55 pound bench presses, and I can't remember the rest...

I have until August 20th, 2011 (wedding date) to get in fab shape.

Good luck ladies! Thanks for the encouragement. :)

rodeoratdogs Sat, 01/01/2011 - 16:16

Hi there Third Peppermint :-H , I was wondering where you went. Your stats look really professional and I think you have a great frame to work with. I don't think you are overweight at all but you just need to get your body fat % down to below 23%, basically exchange fat for muscle, you may loose weight but muscle weighs more than fat. I always like mine to be around 19% I looked strong but not to hard, although I have had mine down to 15% but that is unrealistic to maintain for long periods.
Until August is plenty of time to make a huge tranformation at you age, you are going to look so good. ;)
