New Kittens!

Forums

So....I brought 4 kittens home from our local gas station/bait shop. They are pretty young, but eating solid food. Momma was hit by a car and they didn't want the kittens to wind up the same way....so 4 new barn kittens! Need to get some pics of them all...but one is solid black, one is black with a bit of a moustache, some white toes and bib...and the other two are...weird black. They look black until you get up close and then you can see a tabby pattern...white hair underneath..someone told me these are smokes at one point? This is just pics of one, but the other is a dead ringer for it as well...lol oh...guess I did snap a pic of all 4 in a box before I brought them home...lower right corner is kit pictured above...the one upper left is the other with the same type of hair coat. The other two are black with no lighter color mixed in.

a friend of mine told me a bit ago they are Black/White Bi Tabby Smokes...neat

They are black (aa) smokes, no tabby (i.e. agouti, A-). All cats have an underlying tabby pattern which shows up better in smokes than self blacks. Black smoke is really pretty, they will get better demarcation between the white under and the black top when they are adult. Its a straight dominant gene in cats. The same gene plus tabby (A-) gives silver tabby.

Smoke cats are awesomely gorgeous! There is a member at a Cat Forum that I belong to that has a black smoke shorthair who is gorgeous and his fur looks awesome when it is wet and spiked into white peaks with dark tips. I think the long hair smokes are beautiful.
However, there is also a condition called "fever coat" which can make a black cat look like a black and gray/white Siamese....but it is just the hairshaft color in the warmer areas that are affected with less pigment and as soon as the kitten sheds its' baby coat, the adult fur comes in black. It isn't necessarily caused by a fever, it is just 'called' that. I do have to say, of all the photos I've seen of fever coat, I've *never* seen one like the photo you posted, with the tabby markings so prominent.
I'd LOVE to see pics when they grow up!

That kinda reminds me of something our rabbits did (but opposite..lol)when they were young and born early in the year. Well..one breed I raised did anyway. My Californias (white rabbit with the dark nose, ears, feet, tail), if the babies were born when it was still pretty chilly at night/day(March-May usually) It is called baby frosting and happens if they chilled before their fur grows in. The fur will grow out tipped with black and the buns look silver on their white.
