This is my Spanish Mustang mare

Sire is a possible dun carrier reg. buckskin roan, but his dam had a partial dorsal as did he and her dam had a dorsal... Dam is a grulla. You're about to be a my new best friend. This horse has changed color incessantly since I bought her she's only three, well, what do you think?

Welcome to the site Wakiya. I am NOT a dun expert and my first thought at seeing your filly was a classic roan (oops  , my bad), then I actually READ your post :laugh1 .

I can't tell much from this angle (do you have pixs of a dorsal? leg barring?), but she could be grulla or a dark buckskin. I do know that a lot of buckskins do have dorsal stripes, but are not dun. I have read post from some of our "experts" that buckskins dorsals tend to be darker (often black like mane and tail) than a true dun's (dun is just a darker shade of body color).

One of our members has a mare we all swore was a red dun, but she tested negative for the dun dilution  - we were sure fooled (I would have sworn she was a red dun).

The head...I'm in love! :love

I think the face is too black for a dark bucksin (but I'm not very familiar with roan so could that make it darker?) and the dorsal looks pretty thick. She could easily be a roan bay dun. He seems to have the purplish cast of a bay roan but a bit more yellow. Or ccould be grulla, they are sometimes a more buff shade, the head makes me lean that way, it's very black.

and welcome to the forum!

Do you have pictures of the different seasons?

I still personally think she IS dun.

Honestly, I didn't even see the roan at first glance. I was like "oh pretty grulla". Then I did a double take at what I thought was ticking, and realized she was roan. Definitely both IMO.

Dunno about grulla....would like to see "dorsal" pics & other dun factor pics...if she has any.
To me looks like a Blue (black) roan.

Here is a pic of Streak my grullo roan for comparison. He's tested Ee aa, the grullo coloring is most obvious in the winter and the roan in the spring. His color changes and in early summer he does have the brownish tint to his coat that this mare does although maybe not quite so dark. I suppose she could be a badly fading blue roan but I would expect it to affect the head more. Personally I don't think many buckskins or bay duns would have a head that dark.

I looked at some pictures of bay dun roan, dunskin roan and grullo roan. Imo she is way to dark and black to be bay or buckskin dun, I'm going with grullo roan.

Ok I still DON'T see grulla, but was wondering if its POSSIBLE for her to be a smoky black roan???????
Could that cause the coloring along the sides?? I agree she's of black, but nothin coming at me saying grulla....YET!!!! lol
As I know some roans may look like they have dorsals, but not a true dorsal.
So is Smoky Black Roan a possibility???

I think the roan makes her leg barring hard to see but in one of those up close pics of her leg you can definitely see it. I looked at some smokey black roans and they still did not look really any different than a regular blue roan. Unless shes extremely sooty or something I think shes still way to dark to be bay or cream, even if she is a little tan.
I found a grullo roan that looks very similar to the OP's mare.

Well here's two more things to ponder.

This is a grullo:

This is clearly a black based roan:

She has no visible dun factor now (that I can make out anyhow), but this was her as a foal, looking every bit grulla:
