My new red dun QH mare

thought Id share some pics of my new red dun QH mare Abby, hoping to get her reg soon! I love her strange dun factor! she has all the usual striping but also has weird spots and patches in the darker colour! very kool as I hadnt seen it very much. I will be getting her tested and praying shes not AA!! I want my grulla dammit! lol :D

She's STUNNING! My favorite shade of red dun. I want! I'll make no wagers on her agouti status. :rofl

ha ha ACC! After my other chestnut mare looking 'red dun' in the distance and being AA im praying this one is aa or A/a!
I cant luck out twice can I? lol

She is missing her offside eye competely, a paddock accident when she was 3 yrs old, thou the tear duct is still there and working good. should I get it sewn closed or leave it be? shes 8yrs old now and has had 2 foals no probs. She is funny on that side as she cant see but shes a sweety :)

If she's been like that 5 years I can't imagine it's doing any harm.

Yeah well... she is pretty pale. No comment. Holding my breath for the results.

The eye was surgically removed and not sewn shut? I have some experience with this (I bought Lacy after she lost an eye to infection - she belonged to a friend so I was sort of in the loop on the whole thing), but the only options were to sew it shut, put a glass eye in, or get a donor eye. I was not aware that you could safely leave it un-sewn. But if it's causing no problems? I don't know....

She actually ripped the eye out in the paddock, and they gave her penicliian, etc and left it. Dont think vet ever saw it. Its been like this for 5yrs and hasnt worried her or got infected. Not sure what to do with it yet.

Thanks everyone! I really hope I can get her reg too, be a shame not to as she has awesome bloodlines and was a real good cutting mare before her injury.

We had a mare at the riding school with one eye missing, it wasn't sewn up. It had been seen by the vet too. Didnt look too pretty but it didn't seem to bother her a bit, she could still kinda blink/ close where it had been if she felt something on her face near it. We had to keep a watch on it though and check every day in case a bit of hay or something had got into it and wash it out if it had. Her tear ducts were intact though so she could clean it out pretty well herself.

Oh my gawd! LOL They are just fine with only one, I do know that! Just takes a little more talking and being careful on the off side when leading. Don't take a corner too tight without seeing for her! LOL My poor Lacy!

Only time hubby has been riding with me was on a trail ride in Skyathos....we were on a cliff ride when they told him his horse was blind in one eye ( the eye next to the cliff edge) - but, they said, he knows where he is going !!! LOL !! He about cacked himself !!! LOL !!!

lovely mare , cool leg barring :flower
jenks , you mentioned donor eyes , can they actually see out of a donor eye or is it just for the sake of appearence?

dakotakdq Mon, 02/22/2010 - 19:08

Well tests are sent....fingers crossed! I also sent away dun test, not sure if they will do it as dont have parents samples yet.

Thanks Karen, if shes AA well its just unlucky! lol. Either way Im over the moon with her. I didnt even like chestnuts or red duns 'that' much until I owned both, now Id be happy if I cant get my grulla for a nice red dun filly :D

I wormed her, etc yesterday and she was an angel. has never been wormed before either! Cant wait to give her needles this week...lol.

With a successful transplant, it would be functional, but I've never witnessed it as it was not affordable for my friend.

Also I found her breeding, very nice! shes cutting bred QH. I can get her reg Stock horse but not QH as her sire didnt have his fees paid up, what a joke!!!
Im calling her: "Cutters Classy Rose"

Her sire was a dunalino that was identical to his sire Mr War Cutter (imp)
Her dam is big palomino pure QH but never reg :(
