My new project :)

I've never been overly into the whole Breyer horse business, but I've always kinda wanted to try my hand at sculpting. I finally got around to starting... this my 2009 project. It's supposed to be a TB. So far I've only been working on it about an hour a month, but whatever, the clay won't dry out. I'll keep you updated on my (slow) progress. The planning/armature stage (1/11/09) [img]http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd214/benzophenoneslave/Sculpt/01_ar…] First pass with clay (1/12/09) [img]http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd214/benzophenoneslave/Sculpt/02_fi…] Trimming it down to size using cardboard guide (1/16/09) [img]http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd214/benzophenoneslave/Sculpt/06_ac…] Trimmed-down version (1/16/09) [img]http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd214/benzophenoneslave/Sculpt/07_we…] I put it into the oven to soften the clay so that I could work it in my frigid apartment... actually that was a really bad idea (those drops on the platform are the remnants of legs  ) (3/10/09) [img]http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd214/benzophenoneslave/Sculpt/09_me…] After some reconstruction work (3/10/09) [img]http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd214/benzophenoneslave/Sculpt/15_cu…] Next up I have to fix the armature on the legs and put them back in, then evaluate conformation again and stick things back where they should be. This sculpting thing is much more difficult than I thought it would be :o

Wow cool project. My hat is off to you as I dont think I could do anything like that in a month of Sundays. Cant wait to see more pics as you progress with it :) .

What a great start -- I can see another CM Russell or maybe even a Remington in our future :ymapplause: .

gah! i'm super jealous! I couldn't do that to save my life, lol! The most i've ever sculpted was....nothing. i carved a horse head out of ivory soap one time, lol, but it failed hardcore. that's really neat!

Depends. I think it would be really fun to cast something. Might practice on something else first

WOW
I've played around with little stuff but nothing serious. I made a tiny clay dragon but it broke some time and I don't know where it is, and I used to carve people and stuff from crayons when I was younger. I would be very intimiated by trying that!

Actually I think the knee looks fine. It's just a long forearm and a short canon, which is actually something I intentionally look for in horses.

This is turning out to be a crap-ton of work :? I'm still working on blocking things out coarsely. Once I get things kinda in place I'll have to take a real hard look at conformation, take measurements, etc and get things right where they need to be. Only then will I begin sculpting in earnest and putting in details. I guess I'll start working on this every couple days, or else I'll probably graduate before I finish it

Here's where I'm at now:

[img]http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd21…]

If you compare it (cyan) to what it should be (pink, with the head placement different), it makes it pretty clear what I need to do next:
-straighten out right hind
-lengthen both forelegs and re-angle slightly (have to mess with armature to do this, unfortunately :BH )
-make chest bigger
-change tail armature and make closer to body
-make hindquarters a tad bigger (hard to see in this picture)

Well at least the topline's ok and the head is not too small (easier to remove clay than to add it...)
Yaaay photoshop...

The only thing I would fix is the length/angle of the distal left hind limb and add a little length to the front limbs below the knee. Otherwise, I think that the rest looks pretty dang good even if it doesn't perfectly match the original image.
