My new foal....

and yes its a HE bugger it! But hes a roan with a star so cant complain! hes a purebred QH. Hes by my sabino QH mare Heidi (Centauri Im On A High - eeAA) and out of a gorgeous brown roan stallion Exy (Kehls Exy Acres - EEAaRr) Im convinced hes a brown roan (no mistaking the roan! lol) What do you guys think? Brown or Bay?

Still not in the habit of discriminating. On second looks, yes, I think maybe brown too, although I do find the thinner skinned the animal, the more likely you are to get black legs on a foal, so I am hedging my bets on this one.

Looks brown roan to me too. He has the dark around the eyes and shoulders. ^_^

Pretty sure hes a brown roan :) Ive been handling him and hes really black under his forehead and around the eyes with a yellow muzzle :)

I will def be tesing him of course!!!! :HB

So if his mum is eeAA then one (at least) of her A's must be At? or can AA on the mare be bay but be over ridden by the stallions At??

accphotography Fri, 11/19/2010 - 02:58

Nope, bay is dominant so if the foal is 'At' one or both of the parents carries 'At' and one either carries 'At' or an 'a'.

dakotakdq Fri, 11/19/2010 - 04:41

The sire is EEAaRr and the dam is eeAA so I would guess my mare has an A & At?

dakotakdq Fri, 11/19/2010 - 04:42

And the sire is a brown roan but as I tested the at U C Davis I dont know if the A's are At's or just A. I presume the stallion is At as hes a brown

Ok so the stallion is 'At' and since the mare is homozygous and the foal is not bay the mare must have an 'At' as well. The mare could actually be 'AtAt' herself. The foal could also be 'AtAt'. If the foal wind up being a bit lighter (more bayish) than your average brown that may well be the case as it does appear that some 'AtAt's are lighter than 'Ata's.
