All very colorful. I agree, the first filly is grey. The second filly, the one you say was born red dun but now has gone grulla, that is usually the effect of gray. She could not have actually turned from a red dun to a grulla (which is a black dun), so she is simply turning grey, which is darkening up her color as it goes along and making her look grulla at the moment.

I think the red dun, 5th down, is going grey, and so is the last colt, the one that is a full brother to you filly.

Actually I've seen pictures of a foal that was born looking red dun shed off grullo when there was no possibility of gray. Not saying the above foals won't gray just that it can (rarely) happen without gray.

These pictures are from the http://www.grullablue.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; website I hope they don't mind my using them.
As a foal.

As an adult.

Here's the link to the page where I found the photos. They have some really great examples of foal colors especially dun based. I hope Toni starts posting here regularly.

I think the important thing is to differentiate between saying she was born a red dun and then become grullo after shedding and saying she appeared to be red dun at birth, but turned out to be grullo once shed.

I meant genetically, he can't change from one to the other. He's either a red dun (dun gene on a red base) or a grullo (dun gene on a black base) but he can't be both. We've either misidentified him in foal coat or correctly identified him and he is not a typical dun and/or he has something else going on (i.e. grey).
