My Appaloosa Colt

This is my 8 month old Appaloosa colt Spud... do you think he will color out? So far he is solid, besides his eyes nothing looks appaloosa on him =( Sire is a buckskin QH, Dam is a very Spotty app (I have pictures of her below) Pedigree here: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/myspotsundetectable Spud's dam (ps She is a completely level mare, I just took horrible pictures of her, but she isnt butt high) Spud [img]http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/ae215/flyinsolow/Spud/0307001239.jpg…] [img]http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/ae215/flyinsolow/Spud/0307001237.jpg…] [img]http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/ae215/flyinsolow/Spud/0307001157a.jp…] [img]http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/ae215/flyinsolow/Spud/0307001248.jpg…] [img]http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/ae215/flyinsolow/Spud/0307001245.jpg…] [img]http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/ae215/flyinsolow/Spud/0307001247.jpg…] [img]http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/ae215/flyinsolow/Spud/0307001244.jpg…]

Most apps that roan out have the other characteristics...this guy's about as characteristic as my Bubba is, and he's out of a full leopard mare by a roaned blanket sire. By "rights", he should have been the loudest of the crop.

The first picture looks like he might have white sclera, but it's hard to tell. Does he? If so, he'll most likely roan at least a little as he ages. No white sclera = no roaning.

UnSpottable Fri, 03/12/2010 - 11:15

He does have white sclera, but no parti colored skin (except inside his mouth which doesn't count I know)

It doesn't matter too much, I was just wondering what his odds of varnishing out were... like 50/50?
He is going to be gelded asp. I have to register him yet... I'm hoping he gets color so I won't have to get a performance permit to show...
but if I have too I will becuase I love him.

He was free but already has cost me a ton :))

Yes, but sclera is not a sign of Appy, necessarily.
I have a Pinto colt, and his full sister, who have white sclera, so, although that is some coincidence, it could just be a coincidence.
Honestly, I would have expected at least a bit of striping on the feet, or a bit of flecking here and there.
On the other hand, stranger things have happened at sea, and I am sure we have all at least one tale to tell of a solid born animal spotting out later.

Since your colt is out of an Appaloosa mare, it's quite likely that the white sclera is a sign of LP, rather than just random white sclera. I've raised many (unfortunately!) non-patterned foals that showed no characteristics at birth other than white sclera. The mottled skin and striped hooves developed later (sometimes much later). Those foals were the ones that were the slowest to develop color. The foals that were born with mottled skin roaned out faster, and to a greater degree, than the sclera-only foals.

However, that's just something I've observed with my own horses. It may or may not hold true for your colt.

I had a hard time getting regular papers on the foals with white sclera as their only characteristic. The ApHC requires mottled skin and one other characteristic. But it's worth a try. The papers can always be upgraded later.

I'm certain I've seen LP roans without white sclera. I also know I've seen TONS of non LP horses with sclera.

Agreed.

Would you please post photos of the LP horses with non white sclera, if you find any? I have never seen any LP horse...even minimum traited LPs...without white sclera.

I have a tobiano/sabino mare that has white sclera. At first I thought she also inherited LP from her sire. The LP leg/feet traits are hidden when a white legged pattern is present. I waited to see if other traits such as mottled skin & coat changes appeared. She is an adult now with no LP showing at all so I have to agree on non LP horses having white sclera.
And Diane would tell you to check her where the sun don't shine. :rofl
:rofl Believe me...I have. :rofl

UnSpottable Sun, 03/14/2010 - 15:17

Lol, well this little guy so far is showing no signs anywhere... even where the sun don't shine (I already checked!)

Guess I will just wait and see! How exciting :D

Arock Sun, 03/14/2010 - 18:07

Seriously though, mottled genitals also have to do with males. My stallions have mottling in both areas.

My gelding also has mottling. He kept it after I gelded him :rofl :rofl

accphotography Sun, 03/14/2010 - 20:02

I think you guys are missing the depth of my statement.  Diane's mare's mottling was only found with a speculum. ;)

AppyLady Mon, 03/15/2010 - 08:08

LOL! Unfortunately the ApHC won't accept that as proof of mottled skin. How in the world could you take a picture of it anyway?! The mottled skin has to be visible on the outside -- you can't even part the lips.

accphotography Mon, 03/15/2010 - 14:04

Who CARES about the ApHC?! :rofl :rofl I simply meant from a genetics stand point.

rabbitsfizz Mon, 03/15/2010 - 14:53

Mottled skin is mottled skin....after all does it say "Must be clearly visible"?
And, actually, if you own a speculum,(or a very bright torch) this is clearly visible :rofl
