Lp Question

But right at the start there were coloured welshies? But for for memory those early stud book entries weren't descriptive and just say coloured. I honestly see no record of spotteds though.
I don't think so. At least here in the US they aren't. They finally stopped allowing Arabs to be used in the Appaloosa horses
Uhm, nope! While Arab crosses are not the most 'popular' within the breed (they count for the least amount of crossing to another breed), the 'araloosa' is still alive and well and fully accepted into the ApHC registry. There was a move, more than quite a few years ago, to remove Arabs as a cross, but that didn't last long and Arabs were reinstated.

The only recent change to Rule 204 (Bloodline Requirements) was last year (effective 1 January 2010) and only applied to AQHA horses whose papers were annotated "This horse has white markings designated under AQHA rules as an undesireable and uncharacteristic of the breed." An exception was made to allow AQHA horses with this notation on their papers to be allowed if "those white markings are deemed by the ApHC Registrar to be an Appaloosa coat pattern". (Rule 204(2)(a), page 51 of the 2010 Handbook).

204(2)(b) and (d) are the rule sections that pertain to allowance of Arab (AHA or WAHO) and TB (JC), on page 52 of the 2010 Handbook.

That must have been what I was remembering years ago (it's been at least 6 years since I worked the appaloosa circuit). So where they removed, and then reinstated? Trying to remember how that worked because I was pretty sure they were not allowed (at one point I'm guessing).

Oh it was a good 30 or so years ago, from memory, that the BoD voted to remove Arabs...definitely not in recent years. Of course, waaaaay back in the day, the studbook was actually closed....for a day. That's when the BoD discontinued the "foundation" designation and started with the 'tentative'/'permanent' designations, which is another program that went by the wayside a couple decades ago.

LOL thank you, wonder what it was they were talking about. I feel so silly now because I went years thinking they were no longer allowed.

Whew! I'm glad that got straightened out. I thought I'd missed something, and our nice leopard Arab/Appaloosa colt wouldn't be eligible for registration.
