Look what I brought home from work!

I was working today, and a guy came into the store, saying he had a fawn in his backseat where the mother had been struck by a car and killed. Said she came right to him, so he grabbed her to get her out of the road before she got hit. He didn't know how to take care of her or what to do with her so I said I'd take her since I've raised baby wildlife animals before. So I'm currently teaching her to drink from a bottle, goats milk, going to pick up some formula replacement in the morning, but the feed store was closed when I got off work, so I had to get some canned goats milk from the store. I did get her to lick some from the bottle tonight a couple of times, and drink some water from a bowl. As long as she eats and stays healthy I'm going to keep her on my farm since we have 200 acres and closest road or neighbor is 1 mile away, so she should be safe. Spoiled thing though, she follows me everywhere and demands to be on the bed if I'm on the bed using my computer, and I haven't really had much contact with her, but she was kind of scared when I first got her, so I guess she just took to me as her protector automatically or something, but her name is Lizzy. If I can't keep her healthy I guess I'll find a place that can take care of her like a sanctuary or something. yeh, I'm hoping for the best, normally not an advocate of taking them out of their natural habitats, but she had nowhere else to go, her mum was killed and she was just kinda standing there with her mum's body on the side of the road, so he grabbed her before she was next, she's so tiny, maybe 10lbs, her legs have gotten stronger since she's been with me following me, just need to get her to eat a decent amount tomorrow, but maybe a good night's sleep will help with that since she's been through so much stress today.

your best luck in keeping her alive is contact someone who raises deer and find out what they use for their fawns they have to bottle raise. Also, you'll need a special permit to keep her if you don't already have one. Good luck with her :)

OMG the picture of her all curled up on the bed with you... so cute! Best of luck with her and if you have so much land I seriously don't think anyone is going to notice or complain that you have a deer.

OMG its sooooo cute!!!
There's a park here with a petting zoo and that's where people here bring fawns and they raise them. They got featured on Billy the Exterminator a couple times.... I remember when I was little I let a baby suck on my finger, and it was really cute till its molars got me and nearly took my finger tip off.

Isn't there someone on here that raises deer or knows someone who does? I remember someone talking about piebalds and solid white ones on here once.

Thanks for the link! I sent him an email asking if he had any good feeding tips, she isn't being the most willing to eat as of yet, I managed to get 2 ounces of formula in her a bit ago, she wasn't happy about it all, but it's either I make her drink it or she gets sick. Other then that so far she seems to be doing fine, still drinking her water, she was licking and chewing at the dirt today when I had her outside, she walks on a leash and harness out in my yard, want to make sure she gets proper leg development, and she did a bit of running when she was feeling frisky. Right now she's back in my bed, lol she only let me have 4 hours of sleep last night :( but she seems a little worn out from being outside, so maybe she'll let me take a nap!

I have 5 goats now, but they are to aggressive for me to put her in with right now. If everything works out, those will be her buddies when she gets big enough.

OOOOOH!!!! My boss save one (about) 2 weeks old 3 months ago and now its a 6 month old fighting fit girl deer...What...oh that's right a doe... She is such a sweetie on her own in a yard with adjoining paddocks to all sorts! But we don't know whether to let her run with the sheep or horses or mini donkeys and mules as she's made friends with all of them. I reckon she should be let loose under supervision and see whom she prefers....I reckon she is her own person and will travel between the "groups" and be an absolute pain in the butt!! Maybe literally!!!!
They are so beautiful Jazzy aren't they!!!!

How is she doing? I know my wildlife rehab friend down the road (lady I got Luna from) likes to put a small amount of sugar on the nipple of the goats milk bottles the first day or so to encourage nursing. You just dampen the nipple and dip in a small amount of sugar to lightly coat the outside. (Aren't you glad you live in Va and don't need all those nasty permits? Well, unless you have a wolf or tiger - but that's another story, lol)

She should do great...also, call your vet for a complete checkup & bloodwork (deer do carry diseases that could be detrimental to your "critters).

She is doing good, and they are gorgeous :love I've been putting a bit of corn syrup on the nipple and she is starting to like that, I'm going to put a little corn syrup in the formula to sweeten it a bit so she'll like the taste better also. She had a sponge bath at 2:30 am bc I had to get her to go potty with the warm rags, it was easier to put her in the sink and do that, then I did it again when I got home from work, so her system is moving, lol I was trying to explain all of this to my mom about how you have to make fawns go to the bathroom by stimulating their muscles back there, but I don't think she gets it, lol or wants to do it when I'm at work, one or the other, lol but I'm use to dealing with foals, all the same to me, I get the messy jobs of pulling babies out and cleaning them up. We have herds of deer on the property that eat right in with the horse herds, it's kind of funny to look out on the hill and see them all together.

Does she pee and poo everywhere? Or is she housebroken? My god she's going to be shocked when she has to sleep in the grass outside! She'll be pawing at your door! LET ME IN - come on - this is craziness! It's skeery out here!

Andrea Tue, 05/25/2010 - 13:59

Will her fetlocks tighten up like a foal? I just noticed the first pictures looks like she has paws.
She's adorable and we'll be needing daily pictures... :rofl

JazzyPaintsnQtrs Tue, 05/25/2010 - 20:12

She goes outside in the pen during the day and sleeps in her hay, she likes that, I take her out a few times a day for some exercise, I've got her running now, she has a nice hunter trot on her, but she's still working on her lope/leap gait. Her legs are still a bit fragile, she's so awkward right now with her hind legs being so long, she can be unstable when she's tired or on really uneven ground, but i make her run anyways to keep her muscles and legs developing. She actually hasn't gone to the bathroom in the house, she accidently did this morning a bit, but she woke me up to take her outside, but she's had the runs today is the reason why, I think it's because she's starting to eat a little bit of solid foods when I let her in the yard. She decided she was having a shower with me last night :? it was the only way she would be quiet, lol and now she demands the bed, whether I'm on the floor or not, she has to have her blanket and bed, lmao
