I think the Altai mountains are right there on the boarder of mongolia. I know they come in spotted coats, so if there isn't controlled breeding, why not lol.

It does not look like a Mongolian Pony, so maybe a cross breed or something he bought at the market.....

Yeah, I don't doubt that Mongolians have had some contact with Altai horses and considering how old that gene/those genes are it would make sense for it to have gotten over there. Never saw one before, though!

Well, I suppose there are a lot of different horses in Mongolia, not just the "Mongolian" Kind of looks like a cross, maybe with a Galshar? I looked at the Darkhad, Tes, Myangad, and Jargalant and none of those really "fit." Even all of those have a lot of variation, though. We'll just say Mongolian as "that horse is in Mongolia."

Dang, you're right. And here I was all surprised. http://www.carnegiemnh.org/graphics/sci…

Now what I want to find is a varnish roan Mongolian. Or a blanket Mongolian.

EDIT: Unrelated, but dang! Look at that mane! http://foxlily.com/wp-content/uploads/2…

May have found a chestnut with a bider marking: http://danny.oz.au/travel/mongolia/p/57…
