Horse/Pony breeds with Frame
I liked the idea on the other thread to make a list of horse breeds with frame, I need lots of input! Also I am doing alot of this based on just pictures,so thats where I will need more conformation on if they truly carry frame. In Alphabetical order: American Indian Horse American Paint Horse American Quarter Horse American Saddlebred American Shetland American Warmblood Appaloosa Australian Draught Horse (unsure) Australian Stock Horse Azteca Campolina Criollo Curly Falabella Gelderland (unsure) Miniature Horse Missouri Fox Trotter Morgan Mustang National Show Horse Nokota Quarter pony Spanish Jennet Horse Spanish Mustang Spotted Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse Spotted Saddle horse Tennessee Walking Horse Thoroughbred Timor Pony

Yes there is Frame in thoroughbreds.

I am not 100% sure, but I don't think Morgans have Frame... I have been wrong before... but I don't think so.

http://www.rainbowmorganhorseassoc.com/i..." onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; says they can have it, but as far as pictures on the internet I did not see any; the majority were splash or sabino.

There is/was only one known frame and I think she passed away without having a frame foal.

Re: Horse/Pony breeds with Frame

Should I take that one out then, or leave it because there is still some possibility of it?

Re: Horse/Pony breeds with Frame

I would leave it since we don't really know how that one came to be frame and thus there could be others floating around out there. Highly unlikely I think, but I wouldn't breed Lace to one without having it tested so I wouldn't ask anyone else too either.

off the top of my head--I believe I've seen a few American Bashkir Curly horses that looked like they could carry frame. Maybe dig around more on that. I'll look around too and see if I can find any for you

I think Curlys lumped all the different types together but I can look into it more.

Re: Horse/Pony breeds with Frame

I was unsure about shetlands, but I think I was getting them mixed up with welsh. I saw some that were tobiano, and tobiano + but none that looked dead on frame, I'd like to hear some conformation of this by someone with more pony knowledge than me!
Edit: That stallion is definitely frame, and it had to come from one of the parents.
Edit again...: I bet it was the dam, her mother was a paint horse.

That Warmblood is interesting. I wonder if he's tested.

Oh yeah, I do remember that now. Are Americans not allowed to interbreed with the original?

Uhm, yeah, their genetic info is a tad off...frame (overo) is definitely not wanted in a two-copy gene form... :BH :BH :BH :BH :BH :BH

Re: Horse/Pony breeds with Frame

Absolutely - 2 copies of overo (frame) can express in only one way...and with the one or two exceptions is always fatal. I can't remember which horses they were exactly, just that saving them cost thousands upon thousands in vet bills for treatments and surgeries (I will keep my opinions on that issue to myself).

CM, an reason you left off the American Quarter Horse? Also, don't be done in by "photographic" proof...frame can HIDE very nicely in all color patterns - including SOLIDS (as in NO visable white).

I was going to suggest QHs too. There are still too many "cropouts" to call them safe.

The list is interesting- does the gene originate in Asia?

Just thought as Marwari/Kathiawari and Timor ponies having it, they are quite primitive breeds and not really likely to have outcrossed to American breeds.

Hmmm... good point. Where did the North American Indian ponies come from originally?

Spanish; horses were in the americas because of the land bridge coming from asia but I know they got hunted out early on, then the spanish brought them over when they went raiding in south america and mexico area I believe.

Well Spain had all the good colors then as they are definitely credited with introducing tobiano.
