I really do believe ermines are a sign of white suppression. How that figures with splash, I'm not sure. Maybe the suppressor(s) aren't strong enough to suppress splash (hard to believe though given the way it expresses).

My orgional mare from this family had not a speck of whit on her , she was Dun and my mare(her daughter) just has a star and a corner of one hoof white, this tobi filly I think is tobiano ...alone.....the dun mare was bred to a frame stallion(Mr Tux) once and had a pretty frame mare she is registered "Christy brinkly" *gag*...but the next filly she had from a QH was solid chestnut, not a speck of white...I have white supression passing on for sure I think...

Splash will fight very very hard to keep the main white area free of loose spots ime, it likes big clean white areas. As some examples of my own horses:
Chase(definite splash/sabino) has NO colored spots bellow his knees/hocks and only a bit of eyelines on one side
Classy (tobiano/splash) has only one or two on one foot and a side moutache.
V (tobiano/splash) has nothing at all lower than her shoulder and you know her head
Dusty (tobiano +?, who has a suspiciously splash blaze and too much white for pure tobi) has exactly one penny sized dot on his pastern and one on the heel of his hoof
Ali (sabino/frame?, no splash, no tobi) has several ermines on her 3 white legs
Sissy (tobiano +?, suspect frame, sire may have been homozygous splash) has quite few, though less than the horse above, mostly on her right front. left front is clean, even the chestnut is white, consistent with splash's lopsided nature if she indeed does have a splash sock.
Ermines seem to be a feature of tobianos that get wiped out by splash, and probably by sabino to a lesser extent. Of course there is kinds of ermines/distals that are passed on independant of tobiano but for a tobiano to NOT have ermines there is something else there. I just found it unusual that the horse would have such a highly marked splash face and yet the splash was not able to clear the spots on the legs. But then he has quite a large moustache too.

My Paso mare has them and I believe in her case they are down to just rabicano and maybe sabino - no Tobi there at all.
