hair tangles in dog

Hi, I have a purebred rough collie. Does anyone know of a product that will help take out tangles or actually help prevent tangles? Especially in the hair around her ears. I brush her regularly but her hair does get knots and tangles. She is quite sensitive and really hates being brushed. Thanks

There's a dog product called "Show & Grow" or something like that, that they sell in upmarket animal product stores...he can't remember the name cuz it's been a while since he was showing afghan hounds...if you can't find/don't want to pay, another thing that might help would be "No More Tangles" shampoo from Johnson & Johnson (baby/kid aisle, if not in the hair care product aisle of the supermarket). J&J used to make a spray called "No More Tangles" that I can highly recommend for both human and horse, but I've not looked for it here, and don't know if they still make it. Might try Show Sheen or Cowboy Magic. Do NOT use WD40 or CRC, those have chemicals that makes the hair extremely brittle.

My parents raised and showed Rough Coated Collies through the 60's-70's and while I don't remember what products they used to prevent the tangles, after they were combed out I do remember them using cornstarch or baby powder to keep the hair shafts from re-tangling.

Another thing ... [b]DO NOT scrubble, scratch and ruffle that fur behind their ears![/b] :shock: I *know* the dogs love the way it feels, but doing that is what creates the tangles. If you want to massage that area, don't swirl your fingers in circles, instead sort of wiggle-comb your fingers through the fur in the same direction of hair growth.

If its super thick behind the ears take some thinning shears and debulk that hair some and it won't tangle as easily.

Ohh, I will try to cornstarch.

I have tried Cowboy Magic, it seems to be too heavy, it just made the hair feel greasy.
Hmm, maybe I will try reducing it with water.
J &J seems to be too light, no effect.

The local pet store doesn't carry sho and gro, will search and see what I can find.

I don't show my girl so I do thin the hair behind her ears, and horrors, in the spring I give her legs a shave also. She goes outside when I do, through the feilds, bush, loves water so she hits every mud puddle, but she also comes into the house when I do so I need to reduce the
dirt and debris she brings in.

guilty, I do rub behind her ears, never made the connection with the tangles.. :?
