grullo with dapples?
Still in her winter coat, but whats with the dapples? I've had her since she was a yearling and have MANY pics of all her different shades. Both sire and dam were grullo. I have been curious about getting her tested. Should I test for cream? What exactly SHOULD I test for? IMAGE(http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i37/awesometiming/Jazz/3301_179646315407_796805407_6408260.jpg) and heres her whole album that shows ALL the different shades: http://s68.photobucket.com/albums/i37/awesometiming/Jazz/

Only cream? or should I test for anything else. Just for curiosity's sake, as I have no plans to breed in the near future...but maybe one day!

Dun very rarely has dapples on its own and I don't see anything else that jumps out at me about her color. You can always test for pearl and lethal white overo.

If it's for curiousity, test for cream, extension, agouti, and LWO.

hmm... Agouti is what restricts the black to the points right? is there no sense in having her tested for black? I will post the results for the champagne I just purchased when I get home.. he was tested for sable(brown), and agouti, and I am confused on how to read the results. I know he is sable champagne, but I dont understand the agouti results.

Re: grullo with dapples?

Yes, agouti is what restricts the black to the points. You'd test for black (extension) to see what her status is, because we know that she is black based under her coat. :)
Agouti reads like this:
AA -- homozygous agouti (this horse can NEVER produce a black--or any deriative of black--horse)
Aa -- heterozygous agouti (this horse can produce blacks aswell as agouti horses)
aa -- homozygous recessive, meaning this horse does not carry agouti at all, and can never produce an agouti horse.

i think the breeder used UC Davis, but not positive. I have the papers at home (im at work for another few hours..yuck) IF I remember correctly, the results went something like Aa/t or SOMETHING like that. lol.

Re: grullo with dapples?

If she were mine, I'd test for Extension, Dun and Cream. (Extension and Dun to see if she's Homozygous for one of both)
I wouldn't bother testing for Agouti as you said both her parents were Black Duns (Grullo/a), which would mean that neither had Agouti to pass on.

Re: grullo with dapples?

Yeah, but she doesn't look like a grulla to me. :? That's why I suggested agouti.

A-ha.. the first and last photos are most definitely grulla, the middle does not look it, on my monitor anyways! So, yup, no need to test for agouti.

Re: grullo with dapples?

what about black? The reason I ask, IF I was to breed her down the line, of course I would like to have another grullo, so, if I tested her for Homo black? or test her for red? so confusing.. And is there somewhere I can read about "extensions?" I am lost and want to learn!

Re: grullo with dapples?

Very basically, extension just refers to red and black. Your black-based mare could be homozygous at extension (EE) or heterozygous (Ee) and this is something you can test for. (And will probably want to do if you're trying to produce another grulla) You can read more about it here. http://www.equine-color.info/node/19" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm in the same tent at this camp, too.
If the horse is Grulla, and a breeding-result of having two Grulla/Grullo parents... :-? there should be NO agouti at all, right?

Grulla/o is a result of Black + Dun. Not bay and dun, or red and dun. Black, no agouti, and dun. Sometimes you can have a cream in there, for a Smoky Black + Dun and still visibly look Grulla/o. Most places testing for extension will throw in agouti as a matter of course, but if this horse and either parent showed up carrying an agouti, they could not be grulla/o.

Really? I see bay dun dappled Fjords all the time. Then again, Fjords are Fjords I suppose...

Don't quite a few fjords also carry cream?

Re: grullo with dapples?

Cream in Fjords is rare. About 85% of fjords are bay dun and those that carry cream are very obviously different from those that don't.

Do you have any pics of the dun fjords with dapples? With quarter horses duns rarely dapple.

I would test for agouti too just because of the odd color change.

Re: grullo with dapples?

just updated pics, dapples are now becoming less pronounced as her winter coat sheds out. She seems to have them in the spring, right before a shed... What causes dapples?
