Green Eyes in Horses
Has anyone ever discussed green eyes in horses? I know that pearl can cause green eyes, but are there ever any cases of just green eyes? I keep running across the same blurb about Abyssinian horses that says they have green eyes sometimes, but I can't find any sources. Thoughts?

Re: Green Eyes in Horses

I've only ever heard of one case outside of pearls and I was told it died very young and seemed to have some significant health problem. The only other one I can think of was not truly green but appeared to be some odd mutation (very strange color) but also died at a young age (this one just due to colic so not suspected to be a health problem but it's possible).

there was a foal born a few years ago at a farm that had foal cams...it had neon green eyes...was stillborn or died shortly after though. I think they said it had some sort of liver disorder though.

I suspect that he carries something other than just cream to cause those amber-flecked green eyes and dark (heavily freckled?) eyeliner...just don't buy the "it happens" to double dilutes due to sun exposure theory (I've seen LOTS of cremellos, including my own). Now I have seen a champaign perlino that had that kinda thing going on, just now that solid...any thoughts?

I've thought he has something else going on before too, but have never seen anything other than that on him and have never really looked into his pedigree or get or anything.

o_O Is he really double cream? I looked at all the photos of him I could find, and man he is a very gold color for being a double cream. Any thoughts? http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/amberfie..." onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; thats his ped, i think there is a mis type by them calling Chingadero perl.

I knew a pally horse with bizarre greeny/yellow eyes. He was a gelding with unknown breeding, but obvious palomino.

do they stay green though? I know when I had my champagne boy (my mare foaled him out so I seen him grow up) he only had greenish eyes for about a 5 month span...by the time he was a late yearling he had the pretty amber eyes. His sire had greenish amber eyes when I got a look at him/was able to ride him the day I bought my mare...he was a 4 year old at that time. I seen him a year later and they were more amber than green at that point.

Not usually perlinos, but smokey creams often are. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she was actually smokey cream.

Champagnes can have green eyes.

That's been my experience and what I've been told too that the green is just a stage after the blue and before the amber.

I will say that my gelding and his sire were the only two champagnes I've ever seen up close...both were gold champagnes.

I had a snowcap appy gelding that has very beautiful green eyes that turned into a kacky color greed as an adult. Last time I seen him he was 5 and still had green eyes and he had varnished out. His odd coloring and green eyes are what caused me to stumble onto champagnes.

No champagne in Morgans, champagne is just in the name not genetics :) Morgans do have some extreme color expressions

Re: Green Eyes in Horses

A breeder of Champagne Miniature Horses in Australia produced an assortment of eye colours in her stallion's progeny. These included Green eyes & yes, there were those that had Green eyes at maturity. The stallion being Tribbles Poncho (imp. USA).

I can't find any with green/amber eyes in a short search but I didn't find many close up head shots of the ones with the real gloss on the coat.

He was most likely a

He was most likely a champagne colored Tennessee Walking Horse.  Champagne horses can have green eyes although it is generally a stage they grow through during growth.  Some rare ones do have green eyes as adults.
