I'm going to go crazy. My DH calls me the Ice Queen, but I really must not have the gear for this.... Can someone recommend gloves that I can get through 4 stalls without having my finger-tips stinging with pain? Must I install heaters in the barn to get through this? There HAS to something that enables people to live up north? I literally dream that my finger-tips and toes are black with frostbite. I wake up checking them! I have no problem with hard work, but I don't have the experience/where-with-all to deal with cold and wind.

Jenks, I use TWO pairs of gloves...microfiber snugfitting gloves and over that I wear doeskin (or calf or lamb - any good quality leather). I make it through all the chores just fine without frostbite. It's my TOES that get cold on me...through 2 pairs of sock on top of my nylons and through my pile-lined waterproof boots.

I have tried 2 pair, but in reverse, tight leather ones under fat downstuffed ones. It's difficult to work with 2 inch wide fingers and still didn't keep them warm enough to stop the sting. I will try it in reverse - microfiber eh? I must literally own 12 pairs of gloves now. The best ones so far are the down stuffed leather palm ones (less slippage when mucking) though I still have to stop and ball my fingers up inside halfway through stalls.

I can't do halters with them on. I've begun just letting the horses out of their stalls in the morning rather than removing my gloves. I am feeling some slacker-guilt there....

I live about 15mi from Jenks and I'll help contribute funds for buying some weather. I would also like to buy a vowel. I froze my "A" off last night and need a new one.

Gah! I don't know WHY ... but I've been going out to the barn between 1 and 3 AM to throw more hay to the pony. You'd think I would do this during the DAYTIME, because when I do go out there in the wee hours of the morn ... she still has plenty of hay in her manger!
Maybe this cold is affecting the deep-brain-thoughts that go on inside my head...

We are seriously considering moving back to HI. :lol: We call grandma any time and she's like "oh yeah, it's 75 here" :? :hammer

Heidi- I've been worrying about mine getting cold from not eating at night....as long as they have hay to eat they should be warm~I read an extra 2lbs of hay per 10 degrees below 50. So....I now have a round bale in the pasture (horrors - I've never done that), but there is barely .5 inch of rye! So I run out and throw them hay midnightish in their stalls. I'd let them out at night were it not for the wind and them begging to come in. I swear they won't drink from the trough despite the de-icer. So I fill their buckets with warm tap water and they drink it all until I stop bringing it out. Spoiled rotten hosses!

HI? Really? Heck ya Morgan! I'd SO BE THERE if I could! At least for winter!

Don't hold me to this, but I had always thought what they ate during the day kept them warm at night and what they ate during the night kept them warm during the day. It has something to do with having digestible material in the cecum(?) so it can digest (ferment?) and create internal heat.
I try to keep hay available at all times. I have round bales but I pitch fork it into the manger for more control of easy-keepers. I probably should have rolled this first round bale into the manger for the winter and then 'forked the remaining ones through spring/summer/fall.

Bit of a late post but for those of you still suffering two pairs of socks then a plastic bag inside boots not only keeps your feet drier but is really good insulation.
