Due to decreasing use over the years, I have decided to disable the forum functionality of the site.

Forums will still be available to view but new posts are no longer allowed.

Changes coming to the site

I'm going to have to make some changes to the site. Some of the modules that were being used to integrate the forum and gallery to the main pages are no longer being maintained and were the cause of some the forum hacks we had in Nov. As a result I've separated the forum from the main site pages but I really don't like having to do this. Right now I'm researching options but this is some of the things I've learned so far. Drupal 7 (we currently use drupal6) is really nice and much easier to use but just released and has no bridge for phpBB(our forum) or the photo gallery software I use. Joomla (another content management program) has a really nice bridge program for phpBB and but isn't as flexible as drupal and also lacks a gallery bridge. I may end up migrating the forum to the native Drupal 7 forums IF I can modify them enough to suit our needs. I also may import the gallery into Drupal 7 also again IF I can get things to suit me. I've even considered turning the main part of the site into static html and having the gallery and forum separate but this had its own problems. While I'm doing all these changes I plan to inplement a multisite configuration (much harder to do with just phpbb) and migrate things to http://www.colorgenetics.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I want to add a cat site and a dog color site and possibly (eventually) a chicken site as well. The horse site will be equine.colorgenetics.net and the dog canine.colorgenetics.net etc etc. These changes will take a while to get implemented (think months) but some changes WILL be comming and knowing how some of you hate change :booty I wanted to warn you in advance so you can start preparing yourself. I'll post updates as things go along and will try to get a demo site up and running before I do a final implementation.

Another thanks from me!
Mmmm, if you could get some horse, dog, etc companies to sponser the sites, that would be great. No idea how though....
I really enjoy doing it. If I could just find a good way to make it pay a bit I'd be in heaven =)
I don't know why you couldn't sell advertising on it the way a Miniature Horse forum I know does.

My fiance is a whiz at making money off of website (and not by charging people, either!) Let me know if you wants some tricks of the trade.

Is there anyway to fix/upgrade the search function?? I was trying to find a photo I remembered, but can only remember it was in a bay silver thread, yet I can't search for either bay or silver because they are "too common". Same with some other fairly common words as well.

Anyway to fix that?

Daylene Alford Sun, 01/16/2011 - 21:58

There maybe an addon that would increase search functionality. I haven't ever looked. I'll so some searching tomorrow.

Daylene Alford Tue, 01/18/2011 - 12:36

I was able to tweak the "common word" threshold so you can now search for silver and bay. I does return a ton of results.

OK, so here is what I've decided to do. I'm going to stick with drupal 6 for now and the current gallery2 integration but all the forums are going to be imported into drupal. I've been working out all the kinks on my home computer and will let you all know when the change is going to take place. It will be within the next month. I will have to shut down the forum for probably for a day to make the change over but all posts, signatures and private messages will be imported into drupal so you shouldn't have to worry about loosing anything. However, if you have something that you absolutely don't want to loose please make a copy of it.

I still plan on upgrading to drupal 7 down the road but the image gallery solutions currently offered with drupal 7 are not yet as stable or as robust as I would like them to be so that is on hold for the time being.

And Third Peppermint, sorry, I missed your post the first time around I would love some tips!

Just an idea on the money side as I have no clue really but thought I'd throw it out, would people with colour tested stallions who they market on colour a lot pay to have small adverts next to 'example of x colour' pictures with a link to their website? or as has been mentioned advertising for general equine stuff/colour testing labs? do the labs advertise? surely this would be an ideal place for them to have an advert?

New Theme on main pages. I decided to make a new theme for the main pages before I migrate the forums over. I just uploaded it so take a gander over there and let me know if something looks "off".

Daylene Alford Sun, 02/20/2011 - 13:35

Well I already found a few things I'll have to fix. For some reason the search box isn't showing up at the top of the content and that makes everything looks "squished". Don't know why that isn't showing up looks fine on my test computer. The loggin box also looks funny in firefox. I haven't even check how things look in IE yet.

Hey What The Sun, 02/20/2011 - 13:42

I wish I understood half of what you're talking about lol. You've got a big thumbs up from me for all the work you do on here to keep everything operating smoothly :)

Oh and I also think it would be a great idea for studs/equine related businesses to pay a nominal fee to advertise here. It is international advertising after all. I know I would certainly be happy to pay something to have my stud colt advertised on here :)

I will be porting the forum tonight, tomarrow or wednesday or maybe all three. It will be down for however long it takes me to get things moved.
(There are some things I just can't test offline.)

Most of the functionality you love so much will be present out out of the box. Some of the pretties will not be. I will be adding them as we go along so that I can test and make sure things are working. So if you log on and the forum is down you will know why. Signatures should be present right away. Avatars will not be as I have to make some manual changes for them to show up.

I have been offline for a while and just came on this morning. I'M LOST! Have we lost our "view new posts" button?

I am so technologically challenged. :((

critterkeeper Tue, 03/08/2011 - 15:27

at the top is a view active post...that will bring up the list and you will see a column that has the # of post and in parenthesis is (# new) and if you click on that it will take you to the latest post for that thread.

Well done, it looks fantastic imo! I love the background skin, the cute emoticons and the text style. Heck I'm liking a lot about it 8)

(Though I too, am finding the text in the threads a little small.)
