Ever heard of ears growing white with age?

Does anyone know about horse ears growing white with age?

Sounds odd to me, but according to KateBradleyCreative on Twitter, this one horse's ears grew white with age.

Would that only be possible if the horse were carrying the gray allele, though? Doesn't look like he's got gray to me, but I can ask.

If it was somatic it would be caused by a mutation in the cells affected by the different coloring, so the mutation would only affect the ears.   It probably wouldn't be the same as THE gray mutation but it could be something similar.

It's quite interesting, as the ears are usually one of the last places to be white in animals with white patterns.
