finally! (Myrewyn Sweet Solo's thread)

I have a bay colt, little crooked blaze, two hind socks. Isabelle is a bitch. Finally got him nursing a bit ago. I wish he would go down and sleep.

I've never had a mare and foal cause as much trouble as these two. First the nursing issues, and then the two life-threatening jaunts about the property... and I think I forgot to mention that the other day when they were galloping around, whenever Solo would get too close to Isabelle's flank she would haul off and kick him.

I've had several people ask me whether I will ever breed her again, given her performance this time around. I think Solo will survive, and he's sooo fancy, so I do plan to breed her back. I shouldn't be surprised though. Isabelle would paraphrase the snake story and say, "Well, you knew I was a bitch-mare when you bred me!"
LOL. It's OK. I switched the water barrel I was using because Ditto likes to jump up and get her feet wet! I could just see her jumping in the darn thing and drowning!
So now she's got a trough and she does go swimming regularly! :laugh1
Hmmm, did you print out Ebony's moose impersonation and show them to her by some chance????? Now that the two "mermaids" are in the same paddock, I'm gonna have to see if I can get a picture of them both in the creek at the same time (oh yeah, in prep for weaning, we've put Princess in with Ebony and Pearl. That was...fun... :BH :BH :laugh1 ).

Oh, you guys make it sound so much fun. All my pastures have creeks, so mine has been a mermaid from day one (and the weatherman has made sure it was full at all times - :laugh1 )

As to the weaning and mermaids - All I have to do is put "momma' in the fartherest pasture and baby on a trailer out of town - lol. See how simple it is to wean a foal... :laugh1

Andrea Thu, 05/14/2009 - 09:54

Mine will be the other way around... Silo will be going out of town to the trainer and Ditto gets to stay with me! Mike said we should keep her! He likes her and says, get this: "You did a good job. I'm surprised she's so friendly". :love He knows how to talk to me! :love :laugh1
Fire loves water also.
:laugh1

Sissy and Chase, the brother and sister I got in TN are both big on swimming. I wish I had a pond now cause I feel sorry for them without one. The guy who was raising the weanlings for the breeder when I bought them said Chase would get in the pond and swim around with only the top of his white head showing  And whenever I ride Sissy through the creek she tries to go downstream where it's deeper instead of across.

NZ Appaloosas Fri, 05/15/2009 - 20:11

Princess and Ebony love the creek. Newboy doesn't seem to think much of water. Casey and Bubba will put their front feet into the troughs to help you clean them. The new mare, Skeets, jumps the creek with a squeal, like it's gonna reach up and grab her. The standies won't walk thru' the creek when you want them to, and jump it also like it's gonna eat them, but have no problem walking in and splashing the heck out of it... :hammer weird horses...

okay, I was inspired by Maigray and just took a bunch of new photos of Solo's first trip to the mare pasture. That's not going to work for Belle and Solo, by the way, because Belle will not share or play nice. I had to take them out before she hurt someone (which could easily have been Solo himself.) I'll have to subdivide something for just Belle and Solo and maybe she will tolerate Tiffany.

I have to go to work but here is just one photo to tease. (not cropped or anything, I really am in a hurry)

This is at two weeks and two days old.

more this evening!

Sara Mon, 05/18/2009 - 15:13

Poor Belle... I don't think so! If she looks frantic it's only because she brings it on herself. Actually, like most of us, she is the root of most of her own perceived problems. ;)

So, does anyone see any pony at all in Solo? Other than his relatively tiny ears (I can show you a comparison between him and Georgie at the same age with her big Arab ears), I see a small Thoroughbred. His breed breakdown is 1/2 Welsh, 3/8 Thoroughbred, 1/8 Oldenburg. If you go back some more generations he is even more Thoroughbred than that because Ideal's sire, Inschallah, was an Anglo-Arabian.

Something I have always wondered is whether naming a stallion Inschallah is offensive to Muslims. Any Muslims here who can answer that?

I can't wait until he's a yearling so I can do the string test! I bet it won't be accurate though because when I do the string test on Isabelle it says she has a couple inches to grow. :laugh1 The string test also said Inigo would be 18 hands so I think it just does not work on this particular leggy family.

Here are some more photos from today.

I included the photo above even though it is kind of dark and busy because I think the background looks fake, like one of those ones you can buy at the pet store by the inch. This is the "country scene" backdrop.

Getting this shot made me a little nervous!

:love :love Wow! (and that includes Diana)
I was a bit unnerved by the second pic in the first series though. That tree, I swear, looked like a bubbling explosion of blood on my screen  Must be a. my mindset b. my screen c. my diminished quality internet connection d. all of the above.

Sara Tue, 05/19/2009 - 02:20

I have to tell you that I am laughing so hard right now that there are tears streaming down my cheeks. I'll never look at that tree the same way again.

Oh, and you can see how well I did at making myself go to bed. I got lost in that blog about how Branik is Mean. I'm on call tonight anyway for a friend whose maiden mare is dripping milk as of this morning and she is nervous about foaling her out alone. She is the same friend who came and helped with Isabelle and Solo so I owe her one.

critterkeeper Tue, 05/19/2009 - 13:25

Sara, Solo is a wonderful little "horse" foal...the only thing that reminds me of Cory is his face. I would guess from his size, that he'll hit around 14 hds, maybe even 14.2 which would make him perfect for the older students you teach (providing he got daddys personality and not moms :laugh1 ).

I am sorry, but it really looked scary. :sad :D

She is not aboard, is she?

So did you manage to become a foal-autie last night? 8-)

Sara Tue, 05/19/2009 - 14:15
Solo is a gorgeous boy - in the pic you cropped he looks like he cant keep up with those long legs
Thanks! My friend who owns NF Cardi saw that pic and told me to submit it for the foal cover photo contest in our local sport horse (hunter, jumper, dressage, eventing and pony club) magazine. I might do it!

Sara Tue, 05/19/2009 - 14:28

CK -- I think this boy is too fancy to do lessons! (Sometimes I even think I am crazy to be using Ginny as a lesson pony... even the total newbie parents can see there is something special about her look and movement) If he is gelded he will be trained and sold as a pony hunter. If he is not gelded he is mine, mine, mine to ride and promote. :X

I was not a foal auntie last night, either that or she foaled and my assistance was not needed. I'll call my friend later today for the Emma update.
