Re: finally!

Wow he is CUTE!!! No offense taken vneerland. The funny thing is that there probably isn't that much difference in size. My mare is only 14.3

Well Maya's filly was 41+ inches and Maya is 15.2. Goldie comes up about 3 inches above Maya's elbow.

They were vicious at first but now just excited. Sometimes she squeals like "eeeeee!"

Daylene, I do think your colt is bigger. Even knowing how small the mare is he just looks more substantial and taller. hopefully mine will stay pony sized. he doesn't seem much bigger to me than Jasi's filly from last year and Jasi is only about 14.1.

Cory's foals so far are interesting to me. Basically they look like versions of their dams. Someone here last year who breeds Arabs (I can't remember who! Miss Magus maybe?) said Georgie looked purebred Arab, Peanut looks all Section C, and this colt doesn't have a hint of pony to him other than his size.

Re: finally!

Have you weighed and measured him Sara? It will give you a better idea of his overall size in relationship to both Isabelle and Cory.

The ladies at marewatchers got me into measuring & weighing the foals just after birth (and keeping a record) - similiar to what they do with calves. It is kewl to see how the foals grow, gain weight, etc. :bounce :bounce :bounce

Re: finally!

Thanks and thanks! I'm pretty pleased with him although we were all baffled when he came out with so little white! As he was being born I saw one dark hoof, then another dark hoof, then the face with no wide blaze and was pretty surprised! He'll be just right for the hunter ring as long as he's got the trot.

I have not weighed or measured him. I'll have the vet estimate his weight when she sees him this afternoon. His preferred nursing position is nestled under Isabelle's tummy and he fits there like a puzzle piece so he is exactly as tall as that. :D

I'll try to snap some new photos later today. I did sleep last night but am nursing a monster headache at the moment. Ugh.

Re: finally!

That's what I was thinking. And, if our theory about a suppressor is correct she would have to be heterozygous for it so it will be interesting to watch this if I decide to breed her again. I wonder what a chestnut foal would have been marked like...

Re: finally!

Yup, I agree. I bet sometimes you will get a foal like this and other times you will get a Cory loud (or even louder) foal. I bet a chestnut would have had more. Maybe a full blaze, 3 or 4 socks instead of two, or maybe just the two would be higher.

Does little one have ermines?

Re: finally!

I was trying to look but I can't tell yet. Since his lower (not white) legs are baby-blond I bet the ermines would be blond at this point too and almost impossible to see inside the white socks.

Re: finally!

Oh yes. I know how that goes. Lace's solid leg is BLONDE blonde and thus it is really hard to find her ermines and distals unless you wet her and look for dark skin.

Re: finally!

Okay, the nameless one needs a name. It has to start with "Myrewyn Sweet" so that limits things a little because not everything sounds right with that beginning. I'm actually getting tired already of carrying the Sweet thing on... I wonder how long I'll be able to keep that up.

I'd like to give him a name he could show in the hunter ring with -- but also something that would do him justice as a stallion if I decide to keep him intact. I don't know if you recall but one of my breeding goals has been to have a taller, sportier stallion to take to the ASPR inspection and stand to outside mares (Cory may start standing to outside mares next year as well, by the way) and ideally I wanted that stallion be a homebred animal. So I'll definitely be waiting to see how this colt turns out before I make the gelding decision.

Some names I've been tossing around are:

Myrewyn Sweet...
... Southern Hospitality (sometimes we call Isabelle "Belle" so it's got that southern connection)
... Step Lightly
... Solo (there is a stallion way back in Cory's pedigree called Revel Solo and my guy spent his first several hours on his own while Isabelle pondered her maternal duties)

Actually the more I type the more I'm leaning toward Myrewyn Sweet Solo because last year's foals had jazz names and Solo has a jazz meaning as well.

Opinions? Ideas?

I think I forgot to post his latest updates. You know he didn't really get to nurse for several hours and even then he wasn't getting full meals because Belle would kick him away so then he kept trying to sleep on his feet because he wasn't really full and happy. By the time Isabelle decided that nursing was okay I think his digestive system was already upset by the small meals (and maybe the fatigue) so he started having some diarrhea. However, I also noticed that he was often straining with no results so I went ahead and gave him an enema last night. (I used to believe in enemas for foals as a matter of course but have changed my opinion on these and now give them only to foals who need them. In my experience I've only had to give them to colts.) A couple minutes after the enema a hard piece of poop shot out like a little cork and since then he's been nice and regular, eating full meals, and lying flat out to sleep. Hooray for poop and a $1.68 solution! I think the earlier diarrhea was just the loose stuff that was managing to get by the hard piece that was stuck.

edited to add that I was considering Myrewyn Sweet Perdido earlier until Krickette thought it sounded like sweet potato so I bagged that one! It's kind of like how I got my name. I was originally going to be Shauna Beth until someone said that sounded like sauna bath so they changed it to Sara. Phew! I like Sara much better. :)

You sound happy today!! :bounce :laugh1

I'm glad to hear the solution worked and little one is doing well now! The mental image... :rofl

The Sweet would get on my nerves too eventually. Solo would have been my pick of those as well. Could you give him a barn name and wait to see what he's like a bit more before giving him his full name? I'm always reluctant to give a foal a registered name before really getting a feel for them (unless it's a name that was picked out prior and to be used no matter what). Well that's been my thoughts on other people's foals anyway as I haven't registered a foal myself. I think Solo would be a nice barn name even if you don't use it as his registered.

I'm really excited that you're planning to keep him in tact long enough to see what he's really like. I'm also very exicted you're considering standing Cory to outside mares! :bounce

Re: finally!

I like barn names to have something to do with the registered name if possible, i.e. Lascaux Mambrino is Bree and Myrewyn Sweet Georgia Brown is Georgie, so if I can come up with the registered name quickly and get a barn name out of it that will be best. I'll run Solo by my kids and see what they think. I like them to be involved in the process.

Yep, I'm feeling better today after sleeping in a bed for the first time in 2.5 weeks! I noticed this morning that my house is an absolute disaster and I have mountains of laundry to do but at least foal watch is over!!!

As far as Cory goes he is looking good enough as a four year old to get to stay intact to cover my own mares and it seems a shame for him to be standing around covering just one or two mares a year so I'll take him to be trained to the dummy next year maybe. If I time the training right I can use the semen for Phoebe since I'm not sure I trust her for live cover. Anyway I've had a few people ask if I would ship semen so it seems worth looking into.

That's it Sara - put those lazy males to WORK earning their keep...they are all convinced all they have to do is stand around looking good and giving "in" to the ladies every now and then --WRONG. :laugh1

Re: finally!

I told you already on twitter, but I love Sweet Solo as a name. My mom used to have a horse whose barn name was Solo, and that horse was a total gem. So when I hear that name, it always makes me happy....and surprisingly, i don't hear it often. I always thought it was a lovely name, but I really havent come across many other Solos.

Now I feel bad for not settling on a name for Ditto.
I just sent in Frodo's hair samples for his stallion cert so I still have time. I also did red and agouti status for fun. And yes... I pulled sweet ditto's tail

Don't feel bad -- I just finally named Peanut a couple months ago! I actually haven't sent in his registration yet so now it's going to cost me extra money but oh well. I'll send 'em all in together (the three Cory foals).

I thought you had settled on Ditto's name though. Did you change your mind?
