Experience with Xxterra

Forums

Does anyone here have any first hand experience with Xxterra? I know MP does but anyone else? MP: Have you seen any "yellow goop" with Xxterra use? Really thick, sticky yellow goop all over the sarcoid. It doesn't smell and the ear is not hot or swollen so I feel certain it's not infection. It's definitely not just plasma either. I'm not sure what to think of it. My experience with it thus far is that every time we have yellow goop we see an improvement shortly after... but I'd sure love to know if this is a normal part of Xxterra, and if so... what the heck IS this stuff!? Thanks!!

That would be purulent discharge aka pus :D Pus doesn't always mean infection; it can mean just immune response. It is composed of dead white blood cells that were involved in attacking the sarcoid tissue. I always saw it before sarcoid tissue sloughed off.

What do you know about the fluorouracil injections? Any experience with them? We had to change vets (other vet went on maternity leave) and the new vet is recommending them to us.

I personally have not used it, but have heard of it being used with good effects. You just have to be extremely careful with 5-FU as it is chemotherapy and there is no safe minimum exposure for those (for you or anyone else handling Lacey). It is another one of those multitude of treatments that work for some horses some of the time, which is the unfortunate finding of all the sarcoid treatments. Ask your vet if they have ever tried EqStim as another treatment option.
