dun or bay

what colour is my foal .his sire is a red dun appaloosa dam is a dark bay 7/8 tb and 1/8 cleveland bay the foal looked very dilute in colour at birth, and does have a dorsal stripe but no other characteristics as yet.some people say bay and some say dun.other tested dun foals by this stallion have only developed other characteristics once they have shed their baby coats.also has anyone heard that the dun zygosity test is not 100% accurate as this has been suggested to me. :? can i just say that he actually looks a lot lighter in the fleshGetAttachment[8].jpg

Welcome neuroticbana :D
Pretty baby. You get a vote for bay from me.

Welcome, you can post away now ! Your baby certainly looks like a Bay to me without Dun in my opinion. - cute BTW !

I would say bay. The dorsal stripe looks like it is just counter-shading.

thanks all for that input
but has anyone heard any reports about the dun zygosity test being inaccurate as will get him tested to be sure :) :) :)

First - I am gonna go out on a limb and be the odd woman out and say bay dun  . The foal is a bay - that is a given, however, I think the dorsal is distinct enough (run the full lenght of the spine from mane through the tail) that I would spend the money and test - just to be froggy :bounce

The dun zygosity test is accurate with the exception of certain breeds (Spanish breeds come to mind), but for the average TB or Appy it is my understanding that it is 100% acurate.

It has been my experience that those who claim that zygosity tests are not accurate are the individuals who did not get the results they wanted or had previously claimed (like say a linebacked buckskin owner? ). :sign There are a lot of "dun" horses that simply are not dun but do look the part (right ACC?). :love

bay.

He's awful red for a bay dun, and the line isn't defined enough for me.

Its about as accurate as the "Tobiano Zygosity Test" which was not 100% accurate.

Even if I got the results that I wanted, I still wouldn't be 100% sure, and would retest when the mutation test came out.

rabbitsfizz Wed, 07/15/2009 - 14:26

I agree that the Dun test is not accurate, it does not test for Dun, only for the markers normally associated around Dun as I understand.
Thus as with the old Tobiano test if the animal was H/Z then it was more accurate, but this colt will not be H/Z, so maybe not so accurate??
I am going with Bay, but I have to point out he could be that red and still be Bay Dun, or the appy could be condensing the colour so that he just looks redder than he really is.
Where is Hoofpick these days, I love most that her test is FREE the best price of all!!!

Here for an example is a mare that was tested twice.

With the zygosity test, she tested homozygous. They retested her with the mutation test and she tested heterozygous.

Ive also seen a very obvious tobiano, who at one point tested negative with the zygosity test, but I believe they changed the test slightly and then they tested positive.

I'm here!! Yep free but not 100% acurate...can only show you the results and say "probably"... :toast

critterkeeper Thu, 07/23/2009 - 10:29

Okay, not 100% accurate - I was wrong, sorry. :hammer From what I have been hearing lately, it is depending on where you get your testing done too. It seems one lab has had "results" issues, some of which have turned out to be wrong.
