Dominant White & Chestnut

I have been doing some research as Bandit is going to be included in their DW study :bounce most DW's I see are chestnut? Is there a connection between the 2 genes?

Not on the surface. In fact, dominant white is probably a pattern where base coat color makes the least difference. But a red base color has long been associated with stronger expression of white patterns and also dilutions. As a consequence, the effect is inextricably entwined with a preference for breeding chestnuts.

YAY! That's great news!!!

Yes, there is a correlation. Dominant White is linked to Extension. If the source of the DW had it linked to their 'e' you would see it pretty much staying with the 'e'. The same goes if it happened to be linked to the 'E'. It's a little more apparent when it's linked to the 'E' though since both the DW and the 'E' would always be visible. In the case of 'e DW' linkage you could occasionally have black based DWs because the non DW parent contributed the 'E'.

It's like the tobiano you see in Warmbloods. Nearly all of them are black based.
