Dog eye swelling

Forums

Making a vet appointment since it isn't getting any better but I was wondering what you think could cause this besides allergies. It's my rotti/shepherd dog, he's about 10 years old. I started to notice his eyes looking rather bugged out a few days ago but I wasn't sure if I was seeing things but then it got to where it was obviously swelling, both eyes are the same and they're not itchy at all and he's never had allergies, I'm worried it could be something more serious with his age?

I have heard of a tumour doing this sort of thing but who knows - you are doing the right thing by taking him to the vets - please update us when you've been and hope it's nothing serious. ;)

It's still the same :( , he's going tomorrow morning. Was going to go today but we had to reschedule.

OK I think I finally figured out what is wrong and I'm getting pretty mad.
he's been getting treated with the antibiotics and some days it was looking better but then it would go down again. Today though it was awefull, the lining of the eyes is swollen and covering most of his eyes and he started getting snotty and his nose has completely dried out like all scabby. Now I read these are symptoms of distemper. like a week before this started we took him to the vet for his rabies shot, the girl decided to schedule him for ALL the vaccines at once, it was like a mix of distemper, parvo and hepatitis along with the rabies, which we did NOT ask for and did not want. We were mildly annoyed at the time but it was already done when we found out and were paying. Now I'm thinking his immune system got screwed up by getting that all at once and he may have actually got the distemper. :angry

Most dog vaccines except rabies come in one vaccine. It is called the DA2PP vaccine (distemper, adenovirus-2, parvo and parainfluenza). If your dog is having a vaccine reaction, then you need to tell your vet.

The rabies was a separate shot, that 2nd one was the one he wasnt suposed to get. We called the vet and he says something like Bubba probably got it before he got the vaccine? I know we have some wild dogs out here but I wouldn't expect this particualur dog to have anything to do with "outsiders". He's a very peculiar guard dog attitude and lately hasn't been wandering since his leg is still in cold weather (has a metal pin in it). Who knows...
He'll be taking a look at him on Monday. For now he has us giving him benadaril twice a day? what will that do?

It may just be an allergic reaction to an already allergic animal..bu I highly doubt its distemper, if it is in my experience, I'd putt him down.. The after life of distemper is not nice, massive seziures ..when I worked a/c we got it 2 times the only dogs we got through it then had horrible seziures and one I had to euthanize while sezzing..after that we opted not to save them

Morgan, has your dog never had a parvo/distemper shot before? It's a very important vaccination for all dogs, but not "required" most places like rabies shots.

I know I give mine all their shots myself (starting with the 5-way puppy shot until they are 12 wks, then switching to the 7 way shot). After that they only get the shot once a year for life. Little Abby (who at 11 wks is up to 27 lbs now) will be due another shot next week (I buy mine at TSC - it's Fort Dodge vaccine which is recommended by my vet).

Sure, he had it last year too I'm pretty sure. I just don't like that the assistant scheduled him for it without telling or asking, he's an old dog so its better to be careful and not stress him giving so much at once. Same reasons I split the shots up for the horses. I'm just upset since he's obviously sick with something and getting worse. We've had him since I was about 12 and he's just the best dog.

There is a dog flu ..also a vaccine for it but I think its kinda new.. He may have that.

Bubba passed away last night. We pretty much knew by yesterday. He wasn't able to stand any more and was having trouble breathing, would only drink water and couldn't stay awake more than a few seconds at a time. Don't know what it was except for old age. He was a really good dog and he went down so fast. Just a few weeks ago he was all fit and happy. :sad RIP

Oh, Morgan, I am so sorry...I haven't been on here much and just read about your loss. It may well have been old age, I've had a few of mine go down like that - very suddenly.

We just lost our "Grand Dam" beagle, Queen, the first of the month - the only clue we had was that she'd been slowing down a lot lately, not so quick to chase a rabbit, but that was it. After we passed, I was going through the records that came with her (we'd only had her about 18 mo.), I discovered she was actually almost 17 yrs old - pretty old for a hunting dog...

I DO know what you are going through. I am sorry.

Coopers eye's had a "swelling" to them, more like bugged out. His body was trying to up his blood pressure, as his tissues felt deprived of oxygen. He drank water like mad the one day he was "retired" (he acted like he was 8 mo. old up until the day his valve gave out, and he had a day before his atrium failed) as all systems tried to boost blood volume...his urine was still orange. He was "old dog" tired, and his last day he couldn't keep anything down as his body was reserving all the blood flow for essentials. His resp. rate was through the roof his last hours until we got him oxygen, again his body trying to get more o's to his brain.

The best part about his passing was being able to see the bulge leave his eyes...and being there with him, I couldn't be there for his sister, she was hit by a truck.
