Cutie... color?

accphotography Wed, 04/01/2009 - 23:35

It wasn't the coat color I was pointing out as he IS rather dark, it was the skin color.

I believe last year's filly is a smokey black. I also think it's distinctly possible she also has silver (which would mean the dam does too). Or they could both be silver blacks, but I think that's less likely than smokey silver blacks (or even just smokeys).

I so wish they would test. I am extremely interested in this filly. I'm trying to talk hubby into it.

Andrea Thu, 04/02/2009 - 10:32

The black filly isn't for sale... Already asked :BH He's also got a SUPER cute dunskin filly that he won't part with. I'd love to have her!
Not that I'm shopping at all... I'm awaiting to see what Silo gives me!!!

TwinCreeksFarm Thu, 04/02/2009 - 15:12

Andrea, I've never shopped. And that's how I ended up with Tiger, Cisco, and Lebo. They were all window shopping gone bad...

thorwood Thu, 04/02/2009 - 19:58

My first thought was cremello, & if it is then mum has to be a smoky black & not a liver chestnut.
Have owned smoky black welshies that exact same colour, but liver chestnut & minimal silver look pretty much the same too.

thorwood Thu, 04/02/2009 - 20:03

Also meant to say, I bred a foal a couple of years back that was the exact same colour as the dam in that picture.
I had her tested as both parents were black (dad tested) & I was wondering if mum was smoky black.
Foal turned out be black, no cream. So fading black can look have that "chocolate" shade as well.

accphotography Thu, 04/02/2009 - 21:46

I would KILL many times over for the black filly. I'm begging for the cremello, but I don't think I'm getting anywhere.

Andrea Thu, 04/02/2009 - 22:32

Did you see pictures of Toy? You're talking with Beth?
So ACC... What would you do with a pony??? I know... Pot. Meet Kettle. :rofl

accphotography Thu, 04/02/2009 - 22:38

I have no earthly idea since I couldn't ride it. I guess I just want one. Lacy needs a buddy. Expensive buddy. I'd like to think I could breed fancy ponies... but boy is that a pipe dream.

Sara Thu, 04/02/2009 - 22:56

Don't do it. There is so little use for small ponies unless you can train them as pony hunters (even I have had to finally admit I don't ride smalls well and I weigh only 120 pounds) or driving ponies, and there are enough fantastic Welsh Sec A breeders already doing this in quantities to supply the whole country. I'll leave the smalls to farms like Lochinvar and Wonderland and Eos and concentrate on large mediums and larges that I can adequately train myself.

accphotography Thu, 04/02/2009 - 22:59

Well my present stand on breeding is that I don't believe it should be done unless there is truly a market for it, or you personally are going too use it yourself. So no, I couldn't justify it. But I'd still love to have the filly even without breeding her.

Sara Thu, 04/02/2009 - 23:02

I agree with your breeding stand. Smalls are just tough since they are typically pistols to ride and have to be ridden by children under twelve. It takes quite a rider to take one over a full course at 2'3". I've heard many smalls described as requiring "tiny professionals" as riders.

accphotography Thu, 04/02/2009 - 23:05

:rofl

Lacy's current buddy is one such pony. She's a pistol and a half and a 20yo pro does ride her (the 20yo is teensy weensy). Pony (that's her name) is a Connemara x Welsh and is cute as heck... but she's a little... you know what. I just adore her.

Sara Thu, 04/02/2009 - 23:12

... only the tiny professionals who show them are still in elementary school! Pretty impressive, when you think about it.

I fantasize about having another baby just so I can have them on ponies from the time they can sit up and mold them in to the most fantastic little rider ever. I'm currently battling frustration over soccer/basketball/softball and how it cuts into riding lessons. Parents who don't bat an eye at daily soccer practice and games every Saturday simply don't comprehend that their kids are never going to be good riders with only a weekly lesson. I'm starting to force the issue by not letting kids who only ride once a week jump any higher than crossrails.

Andrea Fri, 04/03/2009 - 13:59

I'm finding a lot of breeders backed off breeding last year. EOS wasn't going to have any foal but had three oopes.
I hate seeing how many foals come out of Promise and Heavenly. Both still have a lot of youngstock and older that they haven't been able to sell. But both have ample room for the ponies to roam and they are "taken care of".
I heard of one Welsh breeder sending some of their ponies to auction. I hope that was only a rumor though.
Farmore still has a lot of youngstock as well.
Sara was right in saying Cs are really getting rarer. Bs have totally taken over at the shows. Their halter classes took half the day! I'd say there were way to many Bs. As were well represented. Cs were almost non-existant and Ds were few, but really nice. As are teetering on becoming byb bait...
I found a really nice nice C mare for sale. But at $4500 I can not justify it. I'm hoping she'll lower her price. Or maybe I'm hoping she won't lower her price! :BH

For now I'm planning on keeping my foal this year. I'll try and take HER to as many shows as possible just to let everyone see what Frodo can do. But not planning on breeding this year. Next year maybe two. But it's so far away who knows! I'll be happy for a boy or girl. Just praying for buckskin!!!

Sara Fri, 04/03/2009 - 14:36

The trouble with As is that their weanling price tends to put them in the range of BYBs. I know what I paid for my colt and I'm pretty sure I know what you paid for yours and it's a steal compared with larger breeds. Sadly that attracts people who can only afford those prices and then they churn out the foals. Why buy one nice mare for $10,000 when that price will get you an A colt and five or six fillies for him? (If you buy from the cheaper farms...)

I really like Cs for their added size but they are just not catching on. I think part of it is the movement, which tends to be cobby. People really don't like that in a pony.

So... other than Tickle I'm bagging the C idea and will stick with my little Arabs and Cory and probably put the second generation to a small TB stallion if I can find one I like.

Andrea Fri, 04/03/2009 - 20:48

Right now the A babies I've seen are selling for $1500-$2500. Surprisingly the older ponies are the byb bait. The untrained and therefore cheaper are almost a dime a dozen. I don't see breeders making a living off babies like they used to though.
I paid WAY too much for Frodo, but I don't regret it. I also realize that I'll probably never make the money back that I've spent on training and showing but I'm having fun and that's what counts!
His trainer is always saying what a smart guy he is and he likes to work. So if he's doing well I'm happy.
Sara... When will we see new pictures of Cory and the foals? I've been wondering how they've been maturing. Have you started riding Cory yet? I saw Suzanne has his jumping picture up on her website. We talked a while back and she commented how much she loved that picture.
Still love Dynamo, but she wants 5K and retained breedings. I'm hoping Silo is going to give me one like him! PLEASE!

Sara Fri, 04/03/2009 - 22:33

If you paid way too much for Frodo I wonder if his price went up from when I was looking at him. As I recall he was reasonably priced and definitely worth it considering how nice he has turned out for you. Are you including shipping costs in your figure or something?

You'll see updated photos of my guys when the woolly mammoth season is over. I'm really pleased with Cory at the moment -- the older he gets, the better he gets I think. I kept going in and out of thinking I would geld him but now I'm pretty happy. I guess it takes a young stallion a while to grow into himself! Yes, I'm riding him but not often. I have three in training right now plus my school horses to keep tuned (and I'm taking care of the farm by myself) so he's been put off for a while. I'm not worried because he's been really easy so far and still pretty young.

I'm surprised Suzanne put that photo on her site! I'll have to go look for it. It's really poor quality but I had to send it to her because boy can he jump!

Andrea Fri, 04/03/2009 - 23:19

No. I paid $3500 for him as a yearling. Looking back it was too much for what I bought. But everytime I look at him wearing those Supreme Champ ribbons I'm giddy! Plus. It was love at first sight and I was on the rebound from my riding accident. I needed a project to keep me into horses but not requiring me to ride.
I probably would have backed out of the sale if she had sent me updated pictures like I requested. When he stepped off the trailer I was like OMG! I bought a goat!
:o

Sara Fri, 04/03/2009 - 23:22

Ooh, the price definitely went up.

I would still think he was worth it. Ribbons! Think of the ribbons!

Andrea Fri, 04/03/2009 - 23:26

Oh. And Frodo is going to a silver show tomorrow. He'll be in driving, western pleasure, trail, and low hunter classes.
I'm so proud of him! I'm hoping he'll be good. At any rate, I should have show pictures soon. Hopefully, sans woody!
Funny cause his trainer hates the blue eyes but says his personality and work ethic make her love him. She calls him "The Rock" as the other ponies she has in training don't catch on as quick. She says Frodo doesn't get frustrated and pissy when they are leaning something.
So I am happy I fell in love with him and Suzanne didn't send those pictures! But I can't believe I'm about to have 5 ponies. Holy Crap! How did that happen????

Andrea Fri, 04/03/2009 - 23:29

How much was he when you were looking? I found him on Dreamhorse at 3K, but when I called and said I wanted to keep him a stallion she raised it $500.
I'm smarter now though. I am totally in love with a mare for sale right now and she's not badly priced, but I can't stand the thought of having 6 ponies to board. I so wish I had acreage!

Sara Fri, 04/03/2009 - 23:59

I thought I remembered it being $2500 but I could be wrong. I could probably find it in old emails.

Andrea Sat, 04/04/2009 - 01:20

Thanks! I can't wait to see how he does. I couldn't make it to this show. He'll also be going to the April 18-19 shows. I'm going to get to see Jeff Dunham on the 18th, but will be able to see him on the 19th. His trainer says he's looks better than the last show and I'll be amazed how he looks. I'm dying to see him!
He's wearing shoes now. My boy is grown up!!!

Sara Sat, 04/04/2009 - 10:57

Shoes?? What is that for? I can't recall ever seeing a Welsh in shoes. North Forks Cardi is competing at Prix St George, I believe, and he's barefoot.

Andrea Sat, 04/04/2009 - 19:44

News from the show... Trainer called and said Frodo won Supreme and Reserve Supreme in halter. He got three firsts in English Pleasure and Division Champion in English Pleasure. :o  I'm stunned! And Giddy! :bounce :bounce
He still has Western Pleasure classes and Driving classes left to go. I'm hoping all goes well in the Driving classes since this will be his debut behind a cart.

Sara, the shoes are for extra support because he is in so many classes. We were hoping it would make him more comfortable. Seems to have worked!
