Cutie... color?

Heidi Tue, 03/31/2009 - 23:13

Cremello? I don't see any reddish tint.
My friend's mare just foaled and is 3 for 3 with Perlino.

When I first looked, i dont know if it's cause I'm sleepy but the dam looked chestnut :S Now I'm thinking smokey black? with dd foal of some color

LOL! Not at all. Just curious why questions before comments (especially that question).

lipigirl Wed, 04/01/2009 - 03:07

This one looks remarkably like you my friend had it it turned out to be a very light Pally I think some people call the lightness an Isabella Pally. The mare looks like a liver Chesnut on my monitor.

Krickette Wed, 04/01/2009 - 03:31

mare looks chestnut to me as well, and i'm gonna jump on the pally train, though i'm probably jinxing everyone and now it'll end up being something insanely weird with like seven kinds of silver, pearl, cream, and chrome

Sara Wed, 04/01/2009 - 10:57

okay, I'm going to guess palomino as well, and splash and sabino just for kicks. Are you going to tell us who it is in the end?

accphotography Wed, 04/01/2009 - 11:16

I'm told she's cremello. She's not been tested, but all of her skin is pink and has stayed pink. Both eyes are blue and she's definitely got color (aka she's not white).

Are you thinking palomino because the dam looks just chestnut, or do you really think the filly is just palomino?

Sara Wed, 04/01/2009 - 11:18

Really it could go either way based on her appearance (palomino or homozygous cream) but it would help to see full body shots of both parents.

Andrea Wed, 04/01/2009 - 13:20

Couldn't the mare be smokey black? She doesn't look chestnut to me.
I would say cremello, but as said before... I'm normally wrong...

rabbitsfizz Wed, 04/01/2009 - 14:33

Hmm...I don't see it myself...the foal you have pictured has cream coat and darkish eyes right form the start.
I am not sure we aren't dealing with max. Sabino here.....I can't see a distinctive blaze....have they DNA'd??

Sara Wed, 04/01/2009 - 14:37

Rabbit, I can see a distinct blaze. It may show up on some monitors better than others.

Sara Wed, 04/01/2009 - 14:42

I just saved the photo and played with it in The Gimp. If you go way down with brightness and way up with contrast, the blaze is easier to see. I don't want to post my edited photo though since I don't own the original image.

Heather Wed, 04/01/2009 - 14:57

oh i thouth the eyes were blue, ok, not cremello... not a clue. need more data to make a guess. family pics yada yada.

Andrea Wed, 04/01/2009 - 15:08

The eyes on the original baby are blue. I think I know where the baby comes from now... Though I'll wait until ACC tells people as I don't want to ruin her game ;)

accphotography Wed, 04/01/2009 - 22:30

LOL! Good job sleuthing Andrea. I am confident you are correct in your guess. Those photos were emailed directly to me, which is why they are on my Photobucket as opposed to the site of the farm.

I'm told she was "a few days old" in the photos. I suspect her skin would have darkened by then.

Just for referrence, a palomino at about the same age:

This filly was born 02/17 so I suspect if her skin was going to darken it would have by now. As of two nights ago her skin was still pink.

Here's the sire:

Dam with last year's filly:

Another shot of last year's filly, who is by the same sire as the "cremello":

Dam has the pedigree to be red, bay or black based and she also has the possibility of being cream and/or silver. Obviously if the filly is a DD, then she is cream, which puts her in the smokey black category IMO. If not, then who knows, but I think at 2 months old they'd know by now if she wasn't.

Sara Wed, 04/01/2009 - 23:24

Yep, I figured that's whose foal it was.

By the way, I just have to be a broken record here and say palominos can be born all sorts of colors. I've been on a couple welsh groups online so I've seen a lot of palomino Welsh foals and more of them have been pale, like Diana, than the deep color of the foal pictured above.

Andrea Wed, 04/01/2009 - 23:27

So remember when we were trying to figure out if the mare was black or liver chestnut? Since the mare isn't palomino, she'd have to be black. I eat my words. ACC right again!
So would that put last years filly at smokey black as well? I really like that filly. What's with the white tail though?
