I have a bay colt, little crooked blaze, two hind socks. Isabelle is a bitch. Finally got him nursing a bit ago. I wish he would go down and sleep.

hoofpick Sun, 05/03/2009 - 06:03

OH and yes of course pics!!!! How are Mum and Bub doing???

Sara Sun, 05/03/2009 - 08:43

Currently I'm sitting in the stall with him sleeping on my lap under sleeping bags. He won't lie down unless I hold him and he's shivering. Vet wants me to start bottle feeding as soon as feed stores open and we can get foal lac. I'll keep you posted.

Dilutes Sun, 05/03/2009 - 09:21

Looking forward to pics. I hope all goes well for the foal.

Monsterpony Sun, 05/03/2009 - 09:23

Don't bottle feed, go straight to a bucket if you can't get Isabelle to nurse. What about Rosalynn, would she foster him if necessary?

vneerland Sun, 05/03/2009 - 09:25

Congratulations! Finally. So you were right about the amount of milk, or it is just mom's catty attitude that is not helping? Do they (mares) ever change their minds?
Get some sleep and some pictures. ;)

critterkeeper Sun, 05/03/2009 - 09:26

:love Congratulations on the new arrival. So sorry to hear he's having a bit of a time of it. We're praying all goes well and he is up running around soon. :ympray:

Paintlover Sun, 05/03/2009 - 09:42
Don't bottle feed, go straight to a bucket if you can't get Isabelle to nurse. What about Rosalynn, would she foster him if necessary?
She's letting him nurse but only for short periods of time and I don't think he's ever getting a tummy full enough to sleep. The vet hopes that if he gets a few dilute bottles of Foal Lac in him, he'll be strong enough to drain her udder and get on a normal nursing and sleeping schedule. When I put a blanket on him, forced him down into my lap (per vet's instructions) and covered him up in a sleeping bag to stop his shivering, he konked out for probably 15-20 minutes. Then he hopped up and nursed for a short while again. Some of my teenage students have arrived and are watching him long enough for me to shower and make coffee.

I did threaten Belle that if she doesn't shape up, I'm giving him to Tiffany. If it came to that I think Tiffany or Rosalynn would probably foster him but I'm confident we can get Isabelle's maternal instinct jump started. She's very excited to have him -- just doesn't realize it comes with responsibilities!

Monsterpony Sun, 05/03/2009 - 09:58

Good to hear. I was worried that Isabelle was having nothing to do with him, at least it is more that doesn't know what to do with him :D

Daylene Alford Sun, 05/03/2009 - 10:28

So she's accepting him just not sure? Hope everything works out.

Did you have to cancel your show trip?

Daylene

Monsterpony Sun, 05/03/2009 - 10:30

She uploaded up pic of him onto facebook and said that he is sleeping with a full belly so it sounds like things are smoothing out.

Daylene Alford Sun, 05/03/2009 - 10:41

Couldn't resist...I stole the photo off facebook. He's to cute!

TwinCreeksFarm Sun, 05/03/2009 - 11:14

:HB congrats! Tiger did the same things, not knowing what to do with the foal, but she was glad it was here. Too bad no blue eyes to contrast that dark coat, but what a fantastic little guy!

Monsterpony Sun, 05/03/2009 - 11:30

Facebook update:
Okay, doing better now! Ate, napped, and feeling spunky. :)

rabbitsfizz Sun, 05/03/2009 - 11:48

About time too!!!
I don't mess around anymore, if I have a mare that does this I sedate her straight away, that way there is no chance of rejection and the sedation allows her to relax and let down the milk.
It only takes a smidgen of sedalin and you have a happy foal!!!
Well, looks like we both get to sleep now......

Andrea Sun, 05/03/2009 - 11:50

YAY! I'm sure Belle will shape up to be a fabulous mom.
CONGRATS!!!!

critterkeeper Sun, 05/03/2009 - 12:00

:bounce :HB Hurray for Isabell - and about time too. Sometimes it just takes patients and love to bring them around...and congrats again Sara on an adorable colt.

Sara Sun, 05/03/2009 - 13:03

haha, or some harsh words and a few jerks on the lead rope. I had to get pretty firm with her and she still occasionally takes a swing at him but it's better than last night when she was aiming and she meant it. She got him so hard once I was checking him all over for broken bones. Good thing foals come out all squishy. I wish I'd had some sedative but that's one thing I forgot in my foaling kit. I'll have it for sure next time I have a maiden foaling!

critterkeeper Sun, 05/03/2009 - 13:20

Great job Sara, sometimes you have to get firm to get them to act "right". :whip I am just so grateful that Maya is such a good momma - protective, but not overly agressive; loving, but not spoiling her either...I just lucked out on this one - :love

critterkeeper Sun, 05/03/2009 - 14:09

:love He is SOOOO adorable...love that face. :toast

PamelaTX Sun, 05/03/2009 - 14:35

Monsterpony Sun, 05/03/2009 - 15:38

Oh my goodness, he is sooo tiny. I guess Isabelle decided to let Cory have a little bit of the say in his appearance.

dakotakdq Sun, 05/03/2009 - 16:42

great news about bub arriving, I hope all goes well with him and theres no more hassles for you :)

vneerland Sun, 05/03/2009 - 16:44

:o He is a HAM! But wow. What a size difference between him and Daylenes newborn colt. (this is somehow cuter right now. Sorry Daylene) ;)
