You didn't need that money, did you?

I just ran across this ad and it makes me laugh and be annoyed at the same time. I see things like this all the time. $40 for a jug of oil. They claim that it will "slow the absorption of feed down" as a big sales point. Well, the $10 jug of soybean oil from the grocery store does the exact same thing; in fact, any fat product slows down the rate of stomach emptying. Nothing special about the this specific fat to make it worth an extra $30 plus shipping. Just a friendly buyer beware.

And yet oil/fat was the number one peeve of Tom Ivers...he said that, beyond the absolute necessary minimum, feeding oil/fat just put on the weight and made a horse lethargic.

I miss Tivers :(

My GI specialist wants to put weight on me by making me drink?/eat? a 1/4cup of corn oil a day.
I know the horses do it, but I just can't help but think: Yeauck! :puke

Sara Tue, 04/21/2009 - 22:33

there are so much more pleasant ways to put on weight than corn oil. I call it "breve". Anywhere you would use milk, substitute half and half. Put in on cereal, request it at Starbucks, even substitute for water when making things like Cream of Wheat. Yum.

Hey! I like butter! ...I do have a piece of toast, slathered with butter, a good sized swipe of Concord Grape jam and a mug of hot milk/Ovaltine before bed. In the winter, I also add a dollop (okay, maybe two) of Baileys or Buttershots.
Not a big fan of burgers, and certainly not fast food burgers (though I wish a Sonic was in our town!) because I have, um, digestive issues. Another big problem is evening nausea. I think I need to get my anti-nausea med changed because it works GREAT, but it puts me to sleep before I can eat! *sigh*

Thanks for letting me vent. I know most people complain about trying to lose weight, and it is nice for me to be able to vent about my own weight problems once in a while. I thought I had been doing very well, last week I had a dinner with my husband every evening and I weighed myself this AM and I was just over 117. Before that, I was eating breakfast and lunch, but not dinner because of the nausea. My plan now, is after I get up from my afternoon nap, start eating and just keep *something* in my stomach all the time. I can sometimes 'flood' the nausea and overwhelm it if I start eating early enough.

When I first became ill I went down to just under six stone, this is not as bad as it sounds as my normal weight is around six and a half- seven stone, but it put me under the "healthy" bar.
I ate peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches and I am sitting here drooling thinking about them!!
It sounds awful and it tastes divine, especially with crunchy peanut butter!!

Thank you! I had forgotten how much I love Super Crunchy Peanut Butter! I've got some in the cupboard so I think I will begin having PBJs for lunch every day. (PBJ = Peanut Butter Jelly) I think that would help greatly.

Sara Thu, 04/23/2009 - 12:35

Vent away, Heidi. Feel free to PM me if it bothers people here.

I've always struggled with my weight, and any upset will throw my digestion off completely. Last summer I was down to about 111-112 pounds and I'm 5'8". I couldn't eat anything except bananas and water for a while there. Now I'm dealing with the hair my body was trying to grow while I wasn't eating and it's very brittle. I have to get frequent haircuts to get the yucky ends off.

Adell Thu, 04/23/2009 - 13:12

I have never had the trouble of losing too much weight, but I can't see how it would be any fun at all. Being at a healthy weight is something MANY people work to.

So when I think of all the yummy fatty foods I would love to eat, I can just tell you and you can eat them for me ;)

So when you say your GI wants you to get 1/4 cup of corn oil a day, does he(she) mean just that or anything that will put some weight on you?

Heidi Thu, 04/23/2009 - 13:28

Wow, Sara!

First, I am pleased to let you all know, I am eating (well, taking bites between typing) a delicious PBJ with Welch's Concord Grape Jam! Yuuummmmmm! Oh, and a glass of milk, 2%...but I just bought 4 gallons at the store, 2 are 2% and 2 are whole milk. It is only my husband and I, but we really like milk, and probably go through between 4-5 gallons in a week. What's funny is we don't really have a lot of cereal...odd.
*I wonder if he's been giving the cats milk?

Sara, in 2005 I got down to 111# and at 5'4", I was downright skeletal. I'd lost a significant portion of my, um, chest area in addition to significant all-over body mass. None of my pants fit. My underwear wanted to slip down off my hips. I wore dresses to 'hide' my bone-y body. I hated for my stick-thin arms to show. I felt I looked like a strung-out druggie/back-lot-whoor and I made my necessary shopping trips as short as possible so I didn't have to be in public for long.
I know what I looked like at 111. I cannot imagine how you looked/felt being 5'8" and 111!
Steroids bumped me up to 160 in 3 short months, and I had a myriad of problems with that amount of fast weight gain. Up, down, up, down, up, down. It was maddening to have to keep four sets of clothes: super thin, regular, transitional and super heavy. Dresses were easier, and so were scrub-pants. I'm now hanging steady at around 120, but I feel I need at least another 10-15 pounds to: 1.) Feel better. 2.) Look better. 3.) Have a 'cushion' if I flare. I have lost so much muscle, I need to see about getting a sheep-skin/wool-thing to put over my saddle so my buttbones don't bruise. And forget about riding ANY horse bareback! I'd be poking into them and make them sooo uncomfortable.
My hair has remained fairly good, but I think it is because I take a particular combination of vitamins that seem to work well for me, my hair/nails. I've also had to bump up my intake of folic acid to try to slow down hair loss from the light chemo I take...though it is spring, and I suspect a large part of that is natural 'shedding'.

No, she specifically said a quarter cup of corn oil. Either drink it straight or mix it into my morning Instant Breakfast/EAS/Milk drink. Oil? ...in my MILK? *shudders* The bottle is *still* unopened.

*EAS is a powdered supplement that is easily digestable.
*Oh, and lets just have everyone send me their extra weight. Win/Win, all around!

Sara Thu, 04/23/2009 - 16:22

Mmm, dairy. I'm a fan. I drink whole milk.

At 111 I looked like a druggie or (as some have suggested) a concentration camp victim. Last summer I swiped my daughter's outgrown pants and shorts because nothing I owned fit. I wore her size 12 children's pants as capris. I saw some photos of myself from then and it was pretty icky. I didn't lose a lot of muscle though so I looked all ropy and just yucky. I weigh about 124 now and am feeling much better.

The trouble with me and vitamins is that when I can't eat I also can't take them. A vitamin on an empty stomach will come right back up.

Oh, I feel for ya! I take my vits with my breakfast, which as I said is a chocolate milk drink. I *love* my 'breakfast' and have it almost every day. I very rarely go without it. My problem seems to be remembering/forgetting my vits.

The biggest problem in our household right now, is I am trying to gain weight and my husband is trying to lose weight. Not much of a problem for most couples, usually...but he has absolutely NO willpower so I feel I cannot keep some of the things I would like to have because he'll sniff 'em out and hog-down. I threatened him last weekend that I was going to padlock the kitchen and he'd only have 15min of access three times a day, then SOL. Drink water and fill yourself up.

Monsterpony Thu, 04/23/2009 - 23:36

Heidi- maybe you could try coconut oil instead of corn oil. It has a better taste and I have a friend that has weight issues and finds that she can eat it by the spoonful, spread on toast (it is solidish at room temp) or in oatmeal.

lipigirl Fri, 04/24/2009 - 07:26

I'm the opposite....I weigh more now then I did before and during my pregnancy - I am now 200lbs (I am 5'8") !!! And I hate it and myself for it...really gets me down, I have managed to lose 7lbs but it's not enough !! I need to lose another 28lbs....hopefully it will go when I am chasing a toddler around ! :flower...but now my Thyroid hsa packed up it will be harder...I am told. :(

Heidi Fri, 04/24/2009 - 10:31

Oh no, Lippi, that's awful. I wouldn't worry so much about baby weight, most people can be determined and work it off, especially chasing a baby around. But when you toss in the thyroid...gah, I'm not sure what you could do. Can your Dr make any suggestions?

Ooooh, and Sara? Your "grazing muzzle" suggestion made me laugh out loud!
...but do you know what was really scary? I actually considered it! 0_o

Oops! Edit to add: I'll check out Coconut Oil when I'm out shopping today.

Sara Fri, 04/24/2009 - 11:09

I'm sorry Lipi! My sister and a good friend both have thyroid issues and are on medication so I know that can be a pain. I hope your doctor can suggest something for you.

Eat natural (salads, meats, natural stuff basically.. NO pasta, breads, chips, chocolate, anything unnatural/processed like french fries) and get B12 shots. My mom did this, and she also weighed 200#, and lost 50# within 6 months. The B12 shots did the trick, as eating natural only allowed her to lose 20# within 6 months last year.

Daylene Alford Fri, 04/24/2009 - 16:10

My neighbor (he's a man so it is a bit easier for him to loose weight) lost over 40 lbs and was able to go off his blood pressure meds simply by cutting out white flour and sugar. He will still eats bread and pasta but it must be 100% whole wheat. His wife and daughters both lost weight this way also. I've tried it twice now and both times I lost weight. I am just weak for sugar :BH

Oh yes he also limits the amount of white rice and potatoes although he says he still will have a baked potato occasionally.

After I had my daughter, I went to a clinic there I got Vit. B shots 3 times a week...I think it was B6 3 times and B12 once per week (but could have been the other way around...nearly 17 years later, the details are fuzzy). Worked wonderfully, and got me down to less than I weighed when I got pregnant.wouldn't complain if I could find a similar clinic now
