??? on appaloosa genetics

I saw a POA pony yesterday that had an odd color. I question whether it might have been a silver. Couple things make me think no. Anyway the pony had one blue eye and the other eye was half blue half brown. This pony had a blaze the wrapped around the side of its nose a bit and one hind sock that seemed pretty straight across. So my question is can appaloosa pattern create blues eyes or do you think splash was involved?

Thanks! That's what I was thinking.

What do you think about her color? Sorry, it isn't the best photo.

^ basically! when looking at her face though I see silver bay, dunno. she doesn't look red based to me and to have the flaxen mane/tail, I would say silver. :-??

Remember, App patterns can mess with the mane and tail color too. I'm leaning toward a black or bay base but I'm not going to place any money on that!

It is really difficult to tell base color on a varnishing appaloosa. My bay varnish app had almost completely white mane and tail.

I'm gonna veto the silver, cuz, as MP says, Lp does funky stuff, including (especially??) to manes and tails. Remember Casey's now white eyelashes? LOL Base colour--kinda hard to figure out. She looks like she could be bay, but then again, she could possibly be black.

I think this one is Silver Black base...it would be interesting to find out.
Diane I have a question on Appies.....but I am up on marestare and I though of it last night and now my mind is a complete blank so if it wanders across the vast empty plains of my mind again I shall try to lasso it and I'll post it as a new thread...OK??? :sign

Kewl beans...I'm always up for questions :bounce

Heather, I'm torn between him being a bay and being a black. Registered name? I can pull him up on the ApHC member's database.

I dont remember it for sure but it was something liek "go white lightening" sire might have been ??? Thunders white lightening? would have been an 80s horse.

NZ Appaloosas Sun, 04/19/2009 - 20:47

Okaaaay....Go Whitelightening, 1986 Florida born gelding, white with spots over loin and hip is registered as a PALOMINO! He's by TS Whitelightening, app stallion, out of Ugolea, qh mare. (http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/go+whit…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Ts Whitelightening, 1980 Florida born stallion, chestnut/sorrel, white over body and hips. With the dam being a QH, I can't check on her colour. I have however just asked on another forum where there are some horse historians to see if I can dig up some info on her.

Wow. That IS terrible.

She's listed as bay. Probably doesn't help as far as markings and I don't *think* I can get those.

NZ Appaloosas Sun, 04/19/2009 - 22:51

Hmmmm....so that really doesn't answer the "palomino" question (and ignoring the colour of the horse in the photo... :laugh1 )

Honestly I think he'd just about have to be. It's so unlikely that he could be silver and I find it HIGHLY unlikely that the app genes alone are causing the mane and tail to be THAT pure of color. I'd say either a flaxen liver or a dark/sooty palomino. His pasterns are red, but that means nothing when it comes to Apps. His base really does look black, but I just can't see that mane and tail happening on a black without silver.
I swear I remember that we researched this horse before and discussed the possibility of him being palomino.
Oh, I know we did...but at that time, the ApHC didn't have the pedigree info available to members online.
