To be more specific...

29.17% - Buckskin
16.67% - Palomino
14.58% - Perlino
14.58% - Bay
8.33% - Cremello
8.33% - Chestnut
4.17% - Smoky Black
2.08% - Smoky Cream
2.08% - Black

So you're looking at a slightly better than 50% chance of some sort of double dilute.

Palomino X buckskin = 25% non-creme, 50% single creme, 25% double creme (though as Diane showed, there are many variations amongst those three groups).

Yep as shown above very common to get a dbl dilute from a pally x bucky

hope this helps, it always helped me when I was starting out.

Take a Chestnut, and give it one dose of cream, it dilutes the colour out to produce a Palomino two doses dilutes further to produce a cremello

Take a bay and give it one dose and you get a Buckskin and two doses a perlino, because in one does form it does not really affect black the dark points remain even to a certain degree with 2 doses which is why you can see a darker colour on a perlino on the legs, mane and tail area.

Take a black give it one dose and you get a Smokey black which looks like a washed out/ faded black, with 2 doses a Smokey cream.

Any of of the above can produce a double dilute if you put them together !

Where else would double dillutes have come from. ;)
I believe that the old ranchers fable was that you should never breed palomino's together (or buckskins together or palomino's to buckskins) because you would get 'lethal white'. :shock: I cringe to think what must have happened to many DD foals in those days. Yikes :cry:

There are no stupid questions! And don't feel bad, I used to think black based horses could be flaxen :? but then i learned its called silver. Also the more you ask questions the more you learn about the colors.

There is a sharp learning curve in coat color genetics, especially when you start out having been taught something else entirely. When I first started posting here, I didn't know the difference between duns and buckskins and my silver black ponies were either grey or chocolate palomino. The only way you can learn is to ask questions. Most of us are here because we [i]want[/i] people to ask questions and learn.

It was never a stupid question...please ALWAYS ask - we love helping other people. I've been on the board for over 3 years now and I still struggle with Appaloosa !!! so please do not apologise !!! ;)

if I hadnt found this site I only know the very basics! I wouldnt have known the difference between a dun & a buckskin, or what a silver or a smokey black was! :)

Not always. Both of these stallions below are Smokey Black.

And apparently this one also as I just found out today that he has a Palomino foal registered out of a Sorrel mare.

However, Cream CAN wash out the Black to a faded color as it has on this mare.

But cream doesn't HAVE to be present for a black to fade...

Yes, or even a Smokey Cream.

Actually, faded is not an accurate description for my mare as there is never a time when she is Black. My best description of her color is that she looks like a root beer float.

When clipped (as you can see on her neck) she is a bit darker. Her winter coat gets a bit lighter. One of the strangest colors I have ever seen.
