What should be tested?

Re: What should be tested?
would that 40$ all in one test be the way to go? money wise at least, I dont really care if it takes a while
Also any ideas on what color she really is? Before it was suggested smokey black and a few other things I cant remember. I think she could be a silver, but I'm not sure.
Re: What should be tested?
Mom is registered black and white, I always thought she was a fading black. I honestly cannot remember what her or Cocos father's parents looked like.
Her father is a black silver with the varnish appy I think.
This was the first foal her parents have had, was an accident, which are always the best!

Re: What should be tested?
If Coco is cream, it could be from either parent as I cannot remember her grandparents colors at all. I dont know if this helps any but here is the oldest picture of Leo (her sire) I can find. He was probably around 3ish. This was before he started varnishing.

I know this thread is really
I know this thread is really old but I should be good to send off some hair next paycheck to get Coco color tested. I'm sending it to UC Davis to have red factor, agouti, cream, silver and tobiano tested, and its only gonna cost me 115$!
Now that they are going into winter coats, her dam is very black while Coco stays very dark brown with lighter fading.

donkeys have their own genes
donkeys have their own genes for white patterns so any horse tests would not work properly, but i know my donkey has spotting and seems to have no other patterns; i dont really understand what you are asking about this mini mare, but she is from two registered AMHR minis (well one never got reg and the dam went over height limit, but point being they are purebred)

i didnt test for dun as she
i didnt test for dun as she has no dun parents and no dun characteristics; but i thought if she was just faded that her spring shed and under her mane would be black like her dam and not chocolate, and i know blacks can fade even lighter than Coco, but i thought they kept black in areas void of sunlight
Coco is N/N for Lp, so she
Coco is N/N for Lp, so she will not varnish and I have no real explanation for her color. On FB people were saying that she was "light black", I think its possible that this is a Tyrpt1 mutation like we see in dogs ,cats,cows,humans,rats,mice... and these "light black" horses are actually producing brown eumelanin. Others with these "light black" horses say that they also shed chocolate and are never true black and then fade out like a normal black would.
I think its possible that

I suppose stranger things have happened but my gut feeling on this is no. The main reason is that TYRP1 mutations tend to dilute skin and eyes as well as coat. You can see this plainly
but also "Brown" mutations tend to be much more noticeable. Way before genetic testing breeders understood that brown or liver was seperate from black. This isn't what we are seeing in horses and no inheritance pattern has been theorized.
I would be very interested in seeing if she responded to copper supplements or paprika.
I know from what I was
I know from what I was reading about Trypt1, they had found a mutation in horses, and thought it could be possible as the cause for Seal brown, but after discovering it wasn't, dropped the study on it, so they don't know what the mutation actually does.
I was also interested in getting some kind of supplements to see if it had any affect.
Re: What should be tested?
Oh man - everything! Extension, agouti, silver, LWO at the least. I would throw cream as well, dun in for kicks, and SB-1 if you're feeling generous about the whole thing. I suppose champagne, tobiano and pearl are superfluous...
