my first "what color is this horse" post in years!! :D

Here's what my trainer delivered to me this morning. She needed the stall space so I get to hang on to this mare for a while, use her in lessons and shows, and try to get her sold (I think she'd take $8,000 if you know anyone looking...). I love her!!! Her name is Splish Splash. They told me she is Paint/Appy but I don't know if she has papers or they're just guessing. She's a show hunter so I'm thinking probably the latter -- most of these guys get sold around without their papers. I don't even know what her base color she is. I always thought she was chestnut from a distance but now I'm leaning toward bay. And patterns?? Sabino, splash, something appy? Sorry, I didn't sweep my wash rack or really groom her before I took these photos. I was in a hurry to post them here. :D

Ohh, it's a pretty splashpaloosa! :bounce
I see splash and sabino and some kind of appy (dont really know my classifications for the appy patterns yet >.<)

OT: I dont know if you'll be trimming her yourself but watch those toes (especially the hind) she's long all around. When you start seeing that kind of deforming of the toe wall you know they've either been going too long between trims or not trimmed short enough. Fronts flare forward, hind more often bullnoses.

Yup, I'll be trimming her. I had noticed she is long so I'll probably do that very soon. I've noticed that my trainer's shod horses are all very much up to date but the barefoot ones tend to look long to me. My last horse that came from there was long as well. I think they're just getting flat trims.

anyone want to guess bay or chestnut?

TwinCreeksFarm Thu, 03/05/2009 - 19:06

Sabino, spalsh, and varnish appy on top of a... I want to say bay coat, but I do question that answer. Now I'm leaning more towards chestnut. What' her mane like; is it a true black? How about her ear rims, are they black? I question the hock because of sooty. And the mane could be chocked up to a dark liver.

Monsterpony Thu, 03/05/2009 - 22:41

I see splash and Lplp, I believe since it looks like she has a couple of spots on her bum. I'd call that pattern lace blanket with varnish roaning. I would also call her chestnut since she is missing the black in the face and ears that you'd expect to find on a bay and the mane looks dark red rather than black.
I think she is sabino/varnish appy. The lack of blue eyes and the front leg white not being higher leans me away from splash, but its still possible.
Splash usually makes higher hind stockings. Those are classic of splash/sabino as is half the face being white with the other side mostly colored.

Either way, I love her. In my barn of greys, bays and chestnuts she is certainly a stand-out beauty!

I found out that she has no papers so no one knows her breeding but can you imagine having her bred to a Wap stallion? Someone (ahem) needs to help me get some shots of her moving and jumping because she's very sporty. Hahaha I just typoed that and wrote spotty instead of sporty!

Stuff like that happens to me all the time. I cant for the life of me type the word "house" without stopping to think. My fingers take over and it allways becomes "horse" :toast

She's bay. And splash (face marking is very like our stallion's, once you can find his...). And varnish roan, not sure on the lace blanket, tho'--wet her hind end down once she's in summer coat, and you should be able to see the appy pattern.

Cuz I know what can happen with bay and appy. LOL Seriously tho', I've never seen chestnut mane/tail/eyelashes change to white, courtesy of Lp, only black/bay horses. And that mare definitely has white eyelashes, I see some white in the forelock.

Hopefully this won't be too small...I'll see if I can get a better picture tomorrow.

White eyelashes on bay appy.

Aw man, and I just showed all my students how she has to be chestnut because her ears aren't tipped in black.

Regarding her feet, we rode her yesterday and all the flare chipped off. I guess I should have trimmed her first but I didn't realize how brittle her feet would be! The arena footing at her old barn is like riding on a mattress so apparently that's what her feet are accustomed to. I need to be able to use her right away and keep her sound (since she's not mine) so I think I have to put shoes on her. :(

Definitely bay IMO, even without LP being a factor. This is just not a color non-Welsh chestnuts sport.

I see a lace blanket too. Very, very obvious splash as well. Splash is, of course, very common in Apps. Do you have her pedigree? I 100% guarantee BEB blood if not Mighty Bright himself. Everything about her looks very Mighty Bright (except her base color).

She only has white eyelashes on the side where the white comes down to her eye right? I'll bet it's the splash. Lace has black pigment all the way around her eye, but white eyelashes on both sides (even the brown eyed side, which is so cool). A friend of mine has a splash TB mare whose white doesn't touch her eye, but she has white eyelashes. I love them!
Diane, what if the white eyelashes aren't from Lp? I have seen white eyelashes on several splashy paints - chestnut included, so that could be coming from her "pinto" patterning.
Can't answer that as I've not studied paint genetics much. But the bit I do know has never included the ability to change black mane/tail/eyelash colour to white--that what you see at birth on a paint is what you see years later. Bay paints that I've seen (photo or in RL) tend to have white only where the paint pattern cuts over/thru' the mane/tail/eye area. Now, aside from Mr Eyeball above, our (tested) bay leopard mare has a mostly white tail and tail, but the colour that you do see is red...outside of her test results, the only thing that shows up "bay" on her are her black spots on her lower legs.
