Just finished a new article on Tobiano

I'm trying to get back in the grove of writing regularly and decided to go with something I know well.  So here you go...

As always feel free to critique.

Oh and for those of you who may not know.  I have a facebook page and twitter account for the site.  The facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/pages/Color-Ge… and the twitter account is @ColorGenetics  I post all updates to those two places as well as to the forum.

Nice article! Very detailed but to the point!

Maybe it's easier to understand for beginners if it would read "white pattern" instead of pattern alone? lines 7 + 14

I think there is a "be" missing in line 11?

I like how you describe that Tobiano is linked to Extension and how crossing over works. What confuses me is that you are asking for homozygous Dominant White horses in your last sentence. It had thought embryos homozygous for DW are not viable hence resorbed at an early stage of pregnancy???

Nice article, well done :)

Thank you for the feedback (especially since it was nice!) =)

Naturally I would want to hear about any horse that was homozygous for dominant white LOL!    I edited out Dominant White in that sentence.   I also agree with you about adding White in-front of "pattern" and I did that.  However, I can't seem to find the sentence with the missing "be".  Could you post the sentence?

I like the changes, Daylene. Even more to the point now. It's kind of embarrassing for me to tell a native speaker she missed a word, but okay here is the sentence I think It is missing a "be" after can - please correct me if I'm wrong :)

ooops,...just read the article a second time and found another sentence with a word missing, this time an "are", I hope you don't mind, I don't want to come across as being a smart ass... and there are probably several mistakes in MY sentences I don't even notice...duhh ;)

In miniature horses, it's expression can found at it's most minimal, at times leaving only the back two feet white.

Some horses that are homozygous for Tobiano lack them and others that are not homozygous having “cat tracks” or similar markings that easily mistaken for them.

I love that you took them time to read things over and offer corrections!  I often don't find mistakes because I read what I meant to say instead of what I actually typed.  It helps if I can wait at least a week and then go back and reread but I usually don't have the patience.

Yep on both accounts...in fact that last sentence is a mess.  How is this instead?

Some horses that are homozygous for Tobiano lack them, while others that are heterozygous, have “cat tracks” or markings that are easily mistaken for them.

Glad I could help a bit. I have the same problem while editing my texts, I think it's just normal to read what you meant to say.

Sounds perfect to me now, agreed - this sentence is better! ;)

Just got a chance to start looking it over, and I love it! I loved the addition of the Extension and KIT linkage explanation.

I highlighted any typos I found.

It commonly results in a solid head and white tale head. Some theorize that Tobiano doesn't add face white but whether this is true or not is still open for conjecture.

Did you mean "cryptic Tobiano?" I've heard the term "slipped Tobiano" too. If not, my bad.

...When Tobiano is very minimal (sometimes called Crypt-Tobiano). It will usually express as four white stockings or socks, sometimes with a whither or neck spot.

This reads more like one sentence to me.

Splash especially homozygous splash seems to “boost” Tobiano. Imparting more white than when either of the patterns are present alone.

Because of this very close proximity, the linkage between Tobinao and KIT is even tighter than between Tobiano and Extension.

I could have sworn it was crypt but now you've got me wondering.  I emailed Rodeoratdogs.  She was the one in who was talking to the APHA about the minimal tobianos.

I made all the other corrections you suggested.

Thank you!

I did not think Tobianos lack of face white was a theory- every Tobiano I have known that is thought to only carry Tobiano has no face white and I take it as read that Tobi limits white forward of the shoulder. Had a colt born yesterday that is Tobi + Splash but no face white- Tobiano won!

Daylene Alford Mon, 05/13/2013 - 16:05

It is "technically" still a theory.  As we have no way to prove that it is true without being able to test for more white patterns.
