Bummer news from home
I talked to my dad today and he said that one of our paint geldings is probably going to have to be put down. He has either a fractured hock or cancer in it according to the vet, so the only real option for my parents is to pts since he is in pain and recovery doesn't look very good. Dad said it was very swollen and he can barely move around, plus now he is starting to drop weight. I remember about a month back he was lame in that leg but it cleared up after about a week or so with some antibiotics and TLC. He is only 16 years old this year and was my moms first paint baby, so she said that she wants him to be buried. I'm saddened but at least he did have a pretty nice life as a pasture puff. Holiday ended up being put

Holiday ended up being put down on the 28th, but they didn't get to bury him, they just drug him to a corner of the farm. I was almost afraid that my mom would try putting off having him euthed because she really didn't want to loose him, and wanted him buried so I had to tell her that she absolutely had to have it done ASAP even if she just had to drag him somewhere on the farm, which she was reluctant to do even though we had done that in the past. When I talked to her the next day, she was very relieved to have it over and done with, and was much happier.

On a more morbid note, I'm glad they just drug him somewhere because whenever he is just reduced to bones I can get some interesting pictures, and take friends to the site and show them the bones and tell a little life story of him (which I've done in the past with others).

I'm glad everything turned

I'm glad everything turned out okay (as okay as it could.) When I was a little kid my mom had a cat that ended up getting really sick. The vet wanted to put her to sleep, but my mom didn't want to give up on her. Unfortunately, the cat ended up having a seizure at home that night that she died from and my mom felt horrible for not humanely euthanizing her when she had the chance. It can be tough when you really love an animal, but I'm glad that you helped her reach the right decision.

That life story thing sounds fascinating... but then again I've always loved bones from an archaeological standpoint.

Well, good luck with that. Last spring, I had a little mare that I had to put down (of course she was a Mini). We have a relative who has several hundred acres down by the river. We took her down there as it was a weekend and I couldn't get a backhoe. I went back a little over a week later, and there was absolutely no sign of her whatsoever. Lots of coyotes, bobcats, and even a cougar or two in the area.
