could he be homozygous silver?

my stallion is a smoky silver black ,do you think he could be homozygous silver ? he has had some tests done he is Ee , no agouti one copy of cream , he hasnt been tested for silver as far as I know but looking at his offspring I think he could be homozygous silver , even some the red based sons have produced silvers from non silver mares , he has produced about 26 foals and not a single black one among them , would you take a look and tell me what you think please http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w176/supaspot/RHA%20Rangers%20Absolu…

Well, it does not actually work that way!!
A horse can sire 100 foals, and every single one of them will be Silver. Then, tragically, the horse dies.
Does that mean he is H/Z??
No, it means the owners were incredibly lucky as the next 5,000 (long lived horse!!- er, apart from the dying bit.... :rofl ) might have been Chestnut/Bay/Black/Whatever.
The only easy way to tell is to test him.

Actually 100 silver foals would pretty much prove the horse was homozygous. Anything over 20 gives a good indication. If he has over 20 black based foals and they are all silver then I would say yes they chances are very good that he is homozygous.

did you watch the link ? to be honest Im not sure what colour half of those foals are , even he was first registered as a palomino because he was so pale as a foal .....hes the one in my profile pic

homozygous and heterozygous silver will visually appear the same, so there is no 100% sure way to know just by looking at him, but with that number of foals all appearing to be silver there is a good chance he is homozygous, but the only way to know for sure is to test him :)

By scientific definition, 100 breedings is the minimum number considered to be proof of homozygosity (well, as close as science gets to giving a definitive positive result- science prefers to talk in ways of disproving things).

Thanks MP- look, I know I am old but I am not senile- a horse can have 1,000 foals- they can ALL be broken coloured. If the last foal he sires is solid he is not H/Z it is as simple as that! If you think of the potential sperm a horse has and the potential breedings he can do (we thought nothing of 50 mares per season with the Arabs, and that is nothing against a successful racehorse) then statistics are just there to make fools of us.
Statistics prove, btw, that New York is 10ft deep in horse doo doo, but I don't think that it is.......

Actually, I think that is pretty close to accurate, and Washington, DC is much worse. :hammer

Well, that should keep the shit afloat...
We have a similar problem in Westminster, I am constantly surprised that the clock tower is still visible........

We just had an election (like last week) here, and already the opposition is crying foul (Labour lost again, leader resigned and now there's a cat fight on to see who gets to be the new leader) in that the re-elected PM didn't have a "mandate" to institute charter schools because it wasn't part of the campaign scene...

Not sure how much governing could be done if gov'ts stuck only to what was in their campaigns... :BH
