Appy Mare

I was given this mare as a great kids horse. She is a cute little appaloosa pony. When I first took a look at her I thought she might have been a few spot as she was in winter coat and had no color on her anywhere - but now I know that is not the case. Come spring she did get some tiny little spots of color on her - nothing bigger than a loonie, and even those seemed very roany without distinct edges. I am guessing she has two white back stockings as the hooves are completely amber in the back, but her front hooves are distinctly striped. It makes me wonder if she is actually greyed out, or can non grey appys have such a lack of color? http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/sunwolf29/Horses/IMG_2071.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/sunwolf29/Horses/IMG_83971.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/sunwolf29/IMG_3961.jpg (PS is it really hard to get good photos of white horses lol)

I suspect she is an appy gone grey...so it would be hard to tell. She does have a significant mottling around her muzzle/eyes there could be other things going on to cause that. :-? Did she come with papers? (wishful thinking I guess, but that could help if she had a pedigree)

Diane, what is your opinion - you're the Appy expert here...

I thinking either appy gone grey or snowcap roaned-out to all white. I have seen some of those around here. Our old stallion was whiter than that, and his original ApHC papers described him as a dun with blanket.

No papers of course lol. Her front hooves are distinctly striped, back not at all. She is 8 - people before me had her for a few years and she hasn't changed colors at all. She has had 2 foals - both varnish appy with no blankets at all neither grey. She has zero varnish marks on her anywhere - just perfectly white except for the tiny spots.

I had a Appy mare that looked just like that, she could be grey as well but the face pic with the the mottled skin looks Appy to me.

Without knowing anything about the horse, I would say grey rather than appy. Appy gone grey maybe?

She is definitely appy - skin is mottled completely all over and I mean all over - when she is wet there isn't a solid bit of skin color bigger than a fist to be found.

She has had 2 varnish appy foals from a QH stallion (that I know of). Neither foal has grey, I was wondering if she maybe had grey as well as I know little enough about the range of phenotypes for appy spots. I have spotted some large black spots that look to be greying out, so I highly suspect grey - but if people have had appys that looked like her, well I was thinking maybe not grey then.

I should just get her tested, but as I won't be breeding her, it is just for curiosity sake.
