Finally a bit of foal bragging of my own

Forums

Slaney got down to foaling last night and in true Slaney style she didnt hang around. She started showing signs of Stage 1 (after eating her dinner and 90% of her hay)at around 11.30pm and the foal was born at 11.55pm. It was a text book deliver but I gave her a little help and then had to tear open the sack - it was the thickest yet and real rubber he would never have come out of it on his own. He was up within mins and was heading for the milk bar straight away but was doing more licking then trying to suck. He had a very poor suck reflex and wouldnt suck my finger either. I milked Slaney and syringed little drops in to give him a taste and to encourage him. He got excited again and knew what he was looking for just didnt know how to work it. Slaney passed her placenta very quickly but when I checked it the placenta was split do didnt know if it happened before or after. Foal was struggling to suck so I milked her again and tried a bottle this time but he wouldnt suck. He looked tired and weak so at around 2.45 called the vet. I milked around 1/4 pint and the vet tubed him and he got 2/3 of it. He got an anti-tet and antibiotic. He put the hand in Slaney but said he couldnt find anything but if it was only a small bit he said he probably wouldnt but she did have a lot of fluid still. That helped her to expel some and then he washed her out. Anyway I got him onto the teats covering my fingers in milk and guiding him on and he is finally getting the hang of it. Still not the quickest at it but he is doing it so can only get stronger. Anyway its a colt and looks to be a Perlino Dun but could also be a Smokey Cream + Dun. He has a very distinct dorsal and its like it was drawn on and goes right into his tail like a pencil mark. I would love to hear what you think of his colour - will try to get better pics but its cold and overcast here today so he may not get out. He is very fine and he was shivering so much I put on the heat lamp and a little rug and he was much happier. Even Slaney was shivering so he was happy with the lamp. No name yet but here is baby foal Hennessy [IMG]http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/SlaneyFoalJune5th201100…] [IMG]http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/SlaneyFoalJune5th201100…] [IMG]http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/SlaneyFoalJune5th201100…]

Awwww he is so cute, he looks adorable in his little rug. Sounds like you had a really long night, my goodness. He does look perlino dun, can't wait for dry pics.

I think he may be smokey grullo due to his very dark face. Looking forward to seeing dry pics!

Actually on Dun Central Station and they had a pic of a Smokey Cream Grullo.

The is his link and that foal pic is just what my foal looks like - the colouring is almost identical

Its not very nice here right now so its not looking good for them getting outside but if they do I will get a couple of better pics.

But I am definately going to test

bleh I didn't mean smokey grullo, that would be just one cream...I guess the easiest way to say it is smokey cream dun, like banner had posted.

He got out for an hr this evening and enjoyed racing and tormenting his mother.
He is so sweet and so curious and has nailed the milk bar now so is full of beans.

Here are a couple of not so great pics I took this evening

I got this pic in a hurry as I had to peel back his rug before he ran off so its only his bum but you can still see the dorsal running into his tail. As he was delivered it was the first thing I could see even through the sack.

I did a head and neck clip on Buck yesterday and just thought I would share a couple of pics so you can see how he is maturing. He is 9 months old now and turning into a very nice boy (well I think so anyway :love )

I couldnt get a full body shot (even though the rest of him is hairy and filthy)as there was only my mother around and well it was like the blind leading the blind. Neither of them had a clue what to do :rofl

So I felt lucky to even get these couple of pics.

So here is Banners Moonstruck Buck at 9mths old. (oh and I have pulled hair and will be sending them to UC Davies to test him for red/black and Agouti and Dun)
