Hi

I was recommended this forum by a friend of mine. I breed and show American miniature horses, have been doing so for a number of years now. With so many different colours/patterns in the mini's I decided doing some research on colour genetics would be a good idea, but I have much to learn LOL! I already posted a topic on one of my yearling colts in the 'what colour' section... thought maybe I could start there and then go on learning from that! I have a basic understanding of tobiano and heterozygous vs homozygous. But when it comes to splash/sabino etc etc I get a little lost! Look forward to hearing from you all! Em :bounce

:newbie Welcome to the forum. We look forward to seeing pixs of your "babies" and sharing info/questions on any topic horse related. We also discuss other animals and topics (color genetics is just the main subject here, as hoof care, feeding/nutrition, genetic disorders/diseases; dogs, cats, chickens, etc. are also covered from time to time) as well and brag a bit... ymwhisle

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

You've already seen my yearling colt on the colour thread. This is one of my girls, who is currently being shown in America and has qualified for the world show in Texas in September. Her dam is tobiano, her sire tovero... there was a discussion on another forum as to whether she carried sabino.

I would think she's more Tobi and splash but ou should test for frame. What is your stud name ?

Awww thankyou!

So I should get her tested for frame?! Is that because her sire is Tovero??

Except for those adorable little ears she reminds me of a NSH in that first picture!

It is always safer to test for frame in any horse that comes from known frame carrying breeds. Frame is the ultimate mutation for hiding in anything. We have seen several examples of horses without a single white hair on them that test positive. Given that your filly is by a known (I assume) frame carrier, then it is definitely warranted. Even her dam could carry frame (unless she has been tested) as it hides quite well in tobiano. There is another thread going on right know with an appy filly that tested postive, which she inherited from her pure QH sire who is not an obvious frame appearing horse.
